This statement may sound provocative, but hear me out.
Uganda has produced incredibly talented filmmakers. We have passionate producers, gifted directors, brilliant actors, and remarkable storytellers. What we have not yet built is a great film industry capable of consistently nurturing, sustaining, and multiplying that talent.
“A great filmmaker is not defined by talent alone.”
They are shaped by a thriving ecosystem, one with strong copyright protection, functioning distribution channels, committed audiences, reliable financing, professional institutions, cinemas, streaming platforms, broadcasters that respect intellectual property, and a market where creativity can be rewarded.
“Film without trade is not an industry, it is simply film.”
It is the industry that creates careers, attracts investment, builds audiences, and gives filmmakers the confidence to keep telling stories.
If we, as filmmakers, genuinely want to change this narrative, then our greatest responsibility is not simply making more films. It is uniting to build a strong and formidable film industry. Without a functioning market that creates a direct economic link between audiences and filmmakers, our creativity will continue to struggle against an unsustainable system.
This conversation goes beyond Uganda.
To my colleagues across Eastern Africa, I ask:
“What are we collectively doing in our respective countries to build a legal, sustainable market for our Original Films?”
– How are we strengthening the connection between audiences and creators?
– How are we protecting copyright?
– How are we building distribution systems that allow filmmakers to earn from their work?
“The future of African cinema will not be determined by who makes the next great film. It will be determined by who builds the next great film industry.”
Yes, talent may create one great filmmaker; but a great industry creates generations of great filmmakers.
