UGANDAN ACTORS IN ZAMBIA FOR ACTOR SPACE

Uganda’s acting industry continues to gain recognition beyond its borders, with five Ugandan actors proudly representing the country at this year’s ActorSpaces and African Creative Market in Lusaka, Zambia.

Agume Mark, Robina Akello, Henry Nathan Katongole, Victor Namakajjo, Esther Natukunda and Isaac Khaweka earned the opportunity after successfully completing several weeks of online professional training, culminating in the final physical programme held in Zambia alongside actors from across Africa.

Their participation was made possible through financial support from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), channelled through the Screen Actors Guild of Uganda (SAGU). The support reflects a growing investment in equipping Ugandan actors with the skills, networks, and international exposure needed to compete on the continental stage.

However, the six actors did more than simply attend workshops and networking sessions.

Recognising the importance of creating visibility for Ugandan productions, they organised a watch party for the Ugandan web drama series ‘Ties That Bind Us’. The screening attracted influential guests, including the casting directors of the South African hit television series ‘The Polygamist’, giving them an opportunity to experience Ugandan storytelling and acting talent first-hand.

This was a strategic move that demonstrates the power of taking initiative. Success at international markets is not only about attending events, it’s about creating opportunities. By placing Ugandan content before key industry decision-makers, the actors increased the chances of future collaborations, casting opportunities, and co-productions that could benefit not only themselves but the wider Ugandan film industry.

As Uganda continues to build its reputation as a source of exceptional talent and compelling stories, such efforts are vital in opening doors to regional and global opportunities.
