The Automation Era is Over. Welcome to the Autonomy Era

For the last decade, tech leadership was all about automation. We built systems to follow rules, streamline workflows, and execute
tasks.

The next decade is all about autonomy. Now, we’re building systems that don’t just do … they decide. They will operate with intent and act on their own to achieve a goal.

Let’s be clear on the difference:

– Automation is a tool that follows a script.

– Autonomy is an agent that’s given a mission.

This pivot changes everything about our jobs as leaders.

Our focus has to shift from engineering workflows to managing a new workforce of digital agents. The challenge is no longer just “Can we build it?” It’s ” How do we govern it? How do we trust it? And how do we lead alongside it?

This will reshape our teams, our products, and our entire R&D roadmap. We are moving from being supervisors of static systems to being managers of active, intelligent agents.

I suspect this transition will require a new playbook for leadership.
