Give Your Network Something to Work With: Key Takeaways from the ASAMU Final Session

It was a day of hearty conversations with my mentorship cohort for 2026 courtesy of Accounting Students Association of Makerere University (ASAMU) as we held the final session following 6 months of deep, mutually beneficial sessions in preparation for their transition from university into the dynamic world of work. I can’t think of a topic that would have been more suitable for the occasion besides “leveraging your network to secure your first major role”.

As the conversation went on, I realised that the rest of us that have been in the work world a while longer don’t spend enough time reflecting on the people in our networks and perhaps how best we could build each other when we leverage on our individual strengths, capabilities and experiences. But again, we learn every day.

The Three Critical Takeaways

• Take stock of your network – It’s important to know who you know, how they can facilitate your interests and even more importantly where you can add unto their cup so that the relationship is mutually beneficial.
• Prepare for the opportunity – Doors will open to the extent that one has deliberately equipped themselves with the skills, qualifications and experience required to fit the role. You need to give your network something to work with to get you where you want to go.
• Keep the fire burning – The interactions with your network need to be continuous, lest the individuals on the other side start to feel like you only reach out when in need, putting the authenticity of the relationship into jeopardy.

After we each shared our parting words as we reflected on the 6 months journey and key learnings along the way, a thoughtful gesture in the form of a frame was handed over for the memories. I finally have a frame to put up in my office when I get one of my own one of these days, but most importantly, I am looking forward to reading from them as they start out and shape their careers into outstanding members in society a few years down the road.
