The Spark
When we kicked off the FutureReady cross-hub pilot four months ago, we started with one simple question:
Are Africa’s young professionals truly ready for the future of work?
Today, after working across 4 cities Kampala, Kigali, Iringa and Dar-es-Salaam alongside 43 learners, 14 expert ambassadors, and 10 focal persons, the answer is clear:
Yes… but only if we intentionally build the ecosystems that help them thrive.
This pilot began as a small spark – a cross-hub idea shaped on a Zoom call, driven by youthful volunteer leaders who believed in collaboration beyond borders.
It grew into a living experiment of youth-led innovation, testing whether we could:
- Build a scalable soft skills learning model
- Deliver content through a lean cross-border team
- Create engagement across different economic realities
- Produce measurable insights on the region’s workforce readiness
And yesterday, we officially closed the pilot phase by screening our documentary film:
“Becoming FutureReady: Youth Redefining Work in East Africa”

This film captures our journey and the lived experiences of young people navigating emerging work systems. It is not just a documentary but evidence and an invitation.
The Scale
The FutureReady pilot was deliberately lean. Our only goal was to test assumptions before scaling to reach 1,000,000 young professionals by 2030.
Here’s what we achieved:
A Cross-Border Workforce Readiness Model
Four Global Shaper hubs coordinating through one system co-designing curriculum, sharing talent and aligning methods. This model strengthened:
- peer-to-peer learning
- regional knowledge sharing
- shared ownership of outcomes
It proved that youth-led collaboration is a scalable infrastructure.
A Curriculum Rooted in the Realities of the Region
We focused on four soft-skill essentials emerging from WEF’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 and regional research:
- Entrepreneurial Thinking & Problem Solving
- Employability Skills
- Effective Communication
- Rapid Prototyping & Testing
Learners rated these as the exact skills missing in their current work ecosystem.
Insights From 43 Learners Across East Africa
Our learners represented diverse sectors from tech to media, engineering and entrepreneurship.
They told us:
- most workforce development options are inaccessible, expensive or misaligned
- youth need skills that help them survive uncertainty, not just formal jobs
- cross-border learning unlocks new imagination and confidence
Their reflections shaped the film.
A Community of Ambassadors Embedded in Work Ecosystems
Our 14 ambassadors – experts from HR, innovation ecosystems, business, academia, and leadership gave their time, networks and lived experience.
They became the bridge between theory and reality; between youth and industry; between emerging talent and opportunity.
A Data Dashboard Showing Real-Time Progress
To keep everything transparent, we built an internal team’s dashboard tracking:
- partner contributions
- learning patterns.
- ambassador contributions
This dashboard will inform Phase 2’s design.
Where We’re Going >> Phase 2 (2026)
The pilot answered our big questions and gave us a backbone. Now, scale is the mission.
In Phase 2 we will:
- Build the FutureReady Fellowship across East Africa
- Expand the curriculum into a full learning system
- Strengthen partnerships with work ecosystem actors
- Launch cross-hub labs, challenges and career pathways
And we are inviting partners, hubs, employers, practitioners and ecosystem builders to join us in shaping what comes next.
The Pulse
At the heart of FutureReady are the youth who made it possible the learners, the ambassadors, the focal persons, Global Shapers and hubs who believed in the idea before it proved itself.
