I made a Google search asking: “What is all the fuss about mental health these days?” I did this so to see what general information would exist for someone who makes a search knowing nothing about Mental health. The answers made me pause and realise that mental health is finally being recognised for what it really is: The foundation of how we live. How we think. How we feel. How we function. How we relate with people. How we work. How we cope with life.
And yet for so long, many of us treated mental health like it was only about “madness” or extreme conditions and for the African context “A white people problem”
Meanwhile people are silently struggling every day with:
- anxiety
- depression
- burnout
- ADHD
- bipolar disorder
- panic attacks
- nervous system dysregulation
- chronic stress
- even physical conditions connected to mental distress like fibromyalgia
What many people still don’t understand is that mental health does not stay in the mind only. It affects:
- sleep
- digestion
- concentration
- relationships
- energy levels
- physical pain
- productivity
- overall quality of life
The mind and body are deeply connected, they each affect each other in a loop.
And the reason there is now “so much fuss” about mental health is because people are finally becoming aware of just how much suffering has been normalised. Working while exhausted. Living while anxious. Smiling while deeply depressed. Functioning while mentally drowning.
Many people are surviving, not living. And some don’t even realise that what they are experiencing could actually be a mental health condition.
Understanding is the beginning of support. And conversations matter because they help people feel seen, understood, and less alone.
Mental health is not a trend. It is one of the biggest conversations of our generation because it affects almost every part of human life. Whereas we still have a very long way to go in understanding it better, at least there is information out there that could be accessed easily and for you reading this and know nothing about Mental health, Use this Month of May to Learn More.
