Last week, I had the privilege of leading a conversation with the Rotaract Club of Kampala North Musical on strengthening Rotaract’s impact through environmental sustainability, a discussion grounded in reflection, learning, and action.
The session was enriched by previous insights from distinguished leaders, including Eric Byenkya (Retired, formerly Ministry of Lands), Olive Lumonya (Deputy CEO, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority), and Stella Alibateese (President, Rotary Club of Kampala North and Justice of the Court of Appeal). Their perspectives reinforced a powerful truth: impact is not created through intention alone, it requires structured, informed, and consistent action.
A key highlight of our discussion was simplifying environmental sustainability into three actionable pillars; water, air, and land (earth) to make ESG more practical and relatable. This helped shift the conversation from abstract ideas to clear, actionable ESG interventions that Rotaractors can implement to create meaningful impact within communities because when we embrace a holistic ESG approach, we move beyond projects, and begin to create the impact that truly matters.
We also conducted a comprehensive review of previous environmental projects, assessing their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). This reflection allowed us to move from activity-driven initiatives to impact-driven, strategic interventions that can be sustained over time.
Important to note was the need for a mindset shift from passive participation to active ownership through communication and partnerships.
Sustainability is not a one-off effort, it is a continuous commitment that requires intentionality, collaboration, and measurable outcomes.
