We spend much of our lives trying to preserve the things we value. Money, for example, is something we’re encouraged to hold onto, spend carefully and save for the future.
Knowledge, however, seems to follow a different set of rules. The more you give it away, the more you gain from it.
I was never the student who spent hours buried in books, but I paid close attention in class and loved discussion groups. Talking through ideas, challenging assumptions and hearing different perspectives was where learning really came alive for me. To this day, I’m always up for a good discussion or debate.
Over time, I’ve realised that some of my deepest learning has happened while trying to explain something to someone else. The more you break down a difficult concept, answer questions and help others understand it, the better your own understanding becomes.
The same is true in the workplace. Training others, sharing what you know and investing in those coming after you doesn’t diminish your value; it sharpens it. Knowledge kept to yourself may make you indispensable for a while, but knowledge shared creates stronger teams, develops future leaders and leaves an impact that extends far beyond your own role.
After all, the true value of what we know isn’t measured by how much we retain, but by how much remains with others because we took the time to share it.
