The President of the Producers Guild of Uganda (PGU), Matthew Nabwiso, on Tuesday joined a high-level delegation to the Buganda Heritage & Tourism Board (BHTB) in a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration between the film industry and Buganda’s tourism sector.
The delegation, led by Ambassador Rosa Malango, the Special Presidential Envoy on Tourism and Trade, included renowned filmmaker and actor Michael Wawuyo Snr, Eleanor Nabwiso of Nabwiso Films (actress, director and producer), and Izaek Ekuuka (cinematographer), among others. They were received by Owek. Najib Nsubuga, Chief Executive Officer of the Buganda Heritage & Tourism Board.
The visit focused on exploring practical ways to elevate the global visibility of Buganda’s rich cultural heritage, historical sites, traditions, and tourism attractions. As part of the engagement, the delegation toured key cultural landmarks within Bulange, Mengo, including the Lubiiri (the Kabaka’s Palace), the Lukiiko (Buganda Parliament), Kabakanjagala Road, which symbolically connects Mengo to Bulange, and several other significant heritage sites.
A central discussion point was the use of modern storytelling platforms, particularly film, as a powerful tool for cultural preservation and tourism promotion. Plans are underway to create structured opportunities for filmmakers to access cultural and heritage sites for filming. Additionally, there is growing interest in adapting traditional Buganda stories into films, ensuring that cultural narratives are preserved and passed on to younger generations.
By leveraging film as a contemporary storytelling medium, stakeholders believe Buganda’s heritage can reach wider international audiences while strengthening cultural identity at home. In many ways, this approach positions film as the “new bonfire”, a modern space where stories are shared, culture is preserved, and identity is shaped.
The engagement starts an important step in aligning Uganda’s creative industry with cultural tourism, opening doors for deeper collaboration between filmmakers and traditional institutions.
The Producers Guild of Uganda continues to position itself as a key driver in elevating Ugandan film on both local and international stages.
