Why Communicators Must Rewrite Uganda’s ESG Narrative

There are commendable efforts by both government and private sector to drive ESG and sustainability adoption through policies and reporting frameworks. However, meaningful buy-in is only achieved through strategic and behavior change communication. Communication is the bridge between ESG as a boardroom KPI and ESG as a compelling narrative that employees, customers, investors, and the public genuinely understand, believe in, and act upon.

Here’s why we need to shift our perspective, enhance, and adopt ESG initiatives that deliver measurable environmental returns on investment, particularly within the Environmental pillar:

1. Our infrastructure is not climate change-resilient.

Uganda has largely not prepared its building codes and construction materials for severe climate change. Most of our buildings, roads, and drainage systems were built with materials and designs that assume yesterday’s weather. When climate change hits, it won’t knock politely. It will come like a missile with floods, extreme heat, and storms and will reduce what took decades to build into rubble. Our businesses, beautiful offices in Kampala, our parents’ home in the village, our factories in Namanve, all are vulnerable.

2. Air quality is a silent debt we’re accumulating.

Kampala currently ranks 8th globally and among the most polluted major cities in Africa for real-time air quality (IQAir, 2025). If we continue down this path, we’re not just talking about extreme coughs and asthma. We’re talking about a future where children and adults wear oxygen masks throughout the day and night, where businesses pay a premium for clean air systems, where individuals will die on a massive scale because the cost of breathing is too high.

This is not a distant UN report, it is a pressing business continuity issue, a human capital concern, and a strategic communications challenge. The costs of adopting ESG-sensitive machinery and operational systems may appear significant at the outset, however, they do not outweigh the far greater economic, environmental, and social costs we will incur if we fail to act.

Uganda has built so much. Let’s not wait for climate change to turn it to ashes.
