What Are We Feeding Ourselves and Our Children?

Between my home and my workplace in Kampala, Uganda, there are six billboards for KFC and three actual KFC outlets, each with a drive-through, and every day I battle a KFC craving.  On visitation day at my son’s school, it feels like every parent carries KFC. My five-year-old lists KFC as part of his best foods, thankfully Vegetables are on the list as well.

On the surface, this seems like we are developing and growing as a country. I mean, the things we used to only see in movies are now in the neighborhood

I used to think about it that way until my mind caught me, we may actually be backwards developing, or at least adopting trends that don’t serve our long-term health.

There is a global pandemic of obesity and related diseases. According to the World Health Organization, over 1.9 billion adults were overweight in 2016, with over 650 million classified as obese and fast food is a major contributor to this. WHO also reports that unhealthy diets are a leading risk factor for death worldwide, linked to heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

In many developed countries, regulators are now restricting fast-food advertising, especially to children, as part of a public-health strategy, yet here we are, boldly but sadly pushing KFC ads everywhere. United Kingdom, for example, has introduced a ban on junk food advertising on TV before 9 pm and a total ban online as part of efforts to curb childhood obesity, effective early 2026.

While there is a positive side in terms of job creation and investment, we also need to be mindful and conscious about what we are normalizing and exposing our children to.

The world is moving towards healthy eating and prevention, while we celebrate the expansion of institutions that are contributors to unhealthy lifestyles.

The full weight falls on parents to choose better

What decision are you making today for yourself and for your children?

How many times are you choosing unhealthy foods like KFC over the healthier options because of social pressures?

What happened to the full meals our parents used to cook for us on visitation day? Beyond the Posho and Beans they have at school, what are you adding to them on VD?

What are our children missing out on?

Every day, we need to ask ourselves these questions. Sustainable living means healthy living, and choosing better starts with each one of us.

Don’t expect the government to stop licensing these businesses they are major taxpayers that responsibility falls on you.

How often do you choose healthy wholesome meals for your homes? How many KFCs are in your neighborhood and what relationship do your children have with it?
