REPHILOSOPHISING KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION FOR INTEGRATION: A Manifesto for Resurrecting the Whole in an Age of Fragmentation

Abstract

 

The reported abolition of the Department of Philosophy at Makerere University is not merely an administrative decision—it is a symbolic amputation of the faculty that once integrated all knowing. This article argues that the disciplinarised university, a colonial inheritance built on rigid silos and the myth of value-free science, has produced epistemological fragmentation so profound that it can no longer address the wicked problems of our time. Drawing on ancient African and Greek traditions of unified knowledge, and advancing the 4-Dimensional Environmental Framework, the 5-Dimensional Knowledge Production Framework, and Team Sciences Learning Centers (Interversity, Crossversity, Transversity, Extraversity), we propose a radical reorientation: the resurrection of integrated and integrative philosophy as the organising logic for all knowledge production. We affirm two foundational principles: “Beyond scope does not exist—everything is connected to everything else,” and “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” The article concludes that the old university must yield to new institutional forms, or be swept aside by a world that can no longer afford the luxury of fragmented thought.

1. The Amputation: When a University Loses Its Philosophical Spine

 

The university, as an idea, has historically carried the promise of universal knowledge—a space where the totality of human understanding could be pursued, preserved, and transmitted across generations. The term universitas means precisely this: the whole. Yet the modern university has become a fortress of disciplinary fragmentation. Nowhere is this tragedy more starkly illustrated than in the recent reported abolition of the Department of Philosophy at Makerere University.

 

Philosophy was not a department but the very architecture of thinking. Its closure—reportedly driven by a government that wants the university to abolish ‘useless’ courses in the humanities and concentrate on sciences—is not merely an administrative cut. It is a symbolic amputation of the faculty that once integrated all knowing. Without philosophy, knowledge loses self-reflection, its ethical spine, and its capacity to question its own foundations. The university becomes philosophically blind and empty, preferring academicism and scholasticism to genuine inquiry.

 

This is not an isolated incident. It is the logical endpoint of a centuries-long process of epistemological fragmentation that began with the birth of disciplinarity in 19th-century Germany and France. Auguste Comte (1798–1857) proposed a hierarchy of disciplines from mathematics to sociology, while Wilhelm von Humboldt’s university model embedded disciplinary specialisation into institutional structure. The immediate consequence was epistemological fragmentation: chemistry no longer spoke to poetry, economics divorced from ethics. Philosophy became the primary victim. De-philosophising knowledge meant that each discipline pretended to generate its own first principles, forgetting that those principles rest on unexamined metaphysical assumptions.

 

The expulsion of morality and ethics from scientific knowledge produced the enduring myth that knowledge is value-free—a dangerous fiction, as climate science and AI ethics now painfully reveal. Today, as Pope Leo XIV recently articulated, safeguarding art and human expression in the age of AI is “neither a nostalgic nor a defensive gesture,” but a way of affirming that a person cannot be understood solely through data.

 

 

2. The Extradisciplinary Past: When Knowledge Was One

 

Before the birth of disciplines, knowledge was whole. In ancient Africa—from the ethical cosmology of Maat in Kemet to the oral epistemologies of the Akan, Basoga and Baganda—no separation existed between natural science, social norms, and spiritual values. Knowledge resided in the Per-Ankh (House of Life)—a seamless weave of astronomy, medicine, law, mathematics, and theology, all governed by Maat (cosmic order/truth). There was no distinct “philosopher”; there was the priest-sage who interpreted the cosmos for communal survival.

 

Similarly, for the pre-Socratic Greeks and through Plato and Aristotle, philosophia was the love of wisdom that united physics, ethics, logic, and aesthetics. Aristotle wrote treatises on physics, biology, poetics, politics, and metaphysics as a single organic corpus. The philosopher was the generalist who held the telos (purpose) of the whole. This was extradisciplinary knowledge: created without invoking disciplinary warrants.

 

The African philosophy of Ubuntu embodies this integrative vision. Ubuntu is both a social ethic and metaphysics. It represents the understanding that “the human community emerges as a part of a larger community”. The indivisible one-ness and whole-ness of ubu-ntu means that doing takes precedence over the doer without imputing either radical separation or irreconcilable opposition between the two. Ubuntu, like Maat, refuses the fragmentation of knowledge into autonomous silos. It insists that “I am because we are”—a principle that applies not only to human relations but to the relationship between all forms of knowledge.

 

2.1 Vindicating Aristotle: Did the Stagirite Backslide?

 

But did not Aristotle himself, the father of logic and the great classifier, commit the original sin of compartmentalization? This accusation is a profound historical misreading. To charge Aristotle with fragmentation is to commit a grave anachronism.

 

Aristotle did not fragment reality; he catalogued aspects of a unified reality for pedagogical and methodological convenience. In his Categories and Topics, he separated the genres of being (physics, ethics, politics, poetics) strictly as heuristic tools—lenses to examine different attributes of the same organic cosmos. He never lost the integrative teleology. In his Metaphysics (Book Epsilon), he insists that while there are “special sciences” dealing with specific kinds of being, there is a primary philosophy (which we call metaphysics) that studies being qua being—the totality. In his Politics (Book I), he explicitly declares that “the state is by nature clearly prior to the family and to the individual,” because “the whole is necessarily prior to the part.” This is the very principle we are resurrecting!

 

The true backslide occurred not with Aristotle, but with the 19th-century neo-Kantians and the Positivists (Comte, Spencer). They fetishized Aristotle’s methodological tools into ontological barriers. They took his separate treatises and turned them into separate faculties. They committed the cardinal sin of mistaking the map (discipline) for the territory (reality).

 

Thus, we do not reject Aristotle; we reclaim him. He is the patron saint of the Extraversity. We must tell the modern university: You have betrayed Aristotle by imprisoning his categories. We are here to liberate them back into an integrated whole.

 

 

3. The Colonial Double-Bind and the Disciplinarised University

 

For African knowledge traditions, the confinement was brutalised by colonial imposition. Indigenous integrated systems—where the omuganga (healer) was simultaneously botanist, psychologist, and theologian, and the council of elders reconciled law with ecology—were deliberately disaggregated. Botany took the plants. Anthropology took the rituals. Theology took the myths. Philosophy was initially denied existence entirely—Hegel infamously placed Africa outside history.

 

When African philosophy was finally admitted to the Western academy in the 1970s and 1980s, it was confined to a niche sub-department, forced to defend its authenticity either as “ethnophilosophy” (anthropological) or “Sage philosophy” (individualistic), rather than being recognised as the living, communal, ecosystem-embedded logos it originally was.

 

The contemporary African university remains a colonial inheritance built on rigid disciplines, siloed knowledge, and the myth of value-free science. Yet the wicked problems of the 21st century—climate collapse, pandemics, algorithmic governance, and social fragmentation—refuse to respect departmental or disciplinary boundaries. Disciplinarity, once a necessary tool for depth, has become a collective roadblock.

 

At Makerere University, under the Academic Policy spearheaded by Professor Akiki Mujaju, interdisciplinarity was deliberately squeezed out of the curriculum—undoing nearly US$600,000 invested by the Ford Foundation in the Interdisciplinary Teaching of Human Rights, Peace and Ethics Project (ITHPEP). The consequence has been the systematic erosion of democratic practices and the rise of oppressive academic intrigues.

 

 

4. The Architectures of Integration: Frameworks for Resurrecting the Whole

 

If we are to resurrect the whole as a legitimate pursuit, we must move beyond critique to construction. This article advances three interconnected frameworks designed to replace fragmentation with integration.

 

4.1 The 4-Dimensional Environmental Framework (4DEF)

 

The 4-Dimensional Environmental Framework organises reality and human experience into four interdependent dimensions:

 

1. The Ecological-Biological Dimension: The physical environment, ecosystems, biodiversity, and the biological processes that sustain life.

2. The Socioeconomic Dimension: Economic systems, livelihoods, production, distribution, and the material conditions of human existence.

3. The Sociocultural Dimension: Beliefs, values, norms, languages, arts, traditions, and the symbolic worlds humans inhabit.

4. The Temporal Dimension: History, change, continuity, intergenerational equity, and the unfolding of processes through time.

 

These four dimensions are not separate compartments. They are aspects of a single, integrated reality. Climate change, for example, cannot be understood without integrating ecological science (dimension 1), economic analysis (dimension 2), cultural values and behaviour (dimension 3), and historical patterns (dimension 4). The 4DEF provides the organising logic for any inquiry that aspires to wholeness.

 

4.2 The 5-Dimensional Knowledge Production Framework

 

Knowledge production itself must move beyond the narrow confines of disciplinarity. We propose five modes of knowledge production, each building upon and transcending the previous:

 

1. Disciplinarity: Depth within a single disciplinary tradition. Necessary but insufficient.

2. Interdisciplinarity: The integration of knowledge from different academic disciplines to achieve a real synthesis of approaches.

3. Crossdisciplinarity: Viewing intradisciplinary knowledge from other intradisciplinary perspectives—a reciprocal exchange that enriches all participating disciplines.

4. Transdisciplinarity: The crossing of boundaries between scientific and non-scientific communities, integrating different knowledge systems—including practitioner knowledge, local knowledge, and indigenous knowledge—beyond academia.

5. Extradisciplinarity: The most radical mode—rejecting the disciplinary ways and structure of the university altogether. Extradisciplinary knowledge is created without invoking disciplinary warrants, returning to the integrated knowing of our ancestors.

 

These five modes are not a hierarchy of superiority but a spectrum of integration. The challenge of our time is to move from the first to the fifth, from fragmentation to wholeness.

 

4.3 Team Sciences Learning Centers: The Interversity, Crossversity, Transversity, and Extraversity

 

The institutional forms that house knowledge production must also be transformed. The university, with its disciplinary departments and siloed faculties, is structurally incapable of genuine integration. We propose four new institutional forms:

 

1. The Interversity: An institution structured around interdisciplinary synthesis—where different disciplines work together to integrate knowledge and methods, developing and meeting shared research goals.

2. The Crossversity: An institution built on crossdisciplinary exchange—where knowledge from one discipline is viewed through the lens of another, creating reciprocal enrichment.

3. The Transversity: An institution that transcends academic boundaries altogether, integrating scientific knowledge with non-scientific communities, practitioner knowledge, and indigenous ways of knowing.

4. The Extraversity: The most radical form—an institution that rejects the disciplinary structure of the university entirely, organised instead around problems, questions, and the integrated pursuit of wisdom.

 

These Team Sciences Learning Centers (TSLCs) can coexist with existing universities, progressively outgrowing them. They are best established in the periphery—in rural and semi-urban areas—where fragmentation is less pronounced than in urban centres where disciplinarity is most entrenched. The periphery offers the advantage of proximity to lived realities, indigenous knowledge systems, and the ecological-biological dimensions that urban centres have abstracted away.

 

4.4 The Digital Sinew: Artificial Intelligence as the Extraversity’s Cartographer

 

If the old university used disciplines as walls, we must use Artificial Intelligence as the bridge and the cartographer of the integrated whole. The critics are correct to warn that AI, trained on fragmented, colonial, and siloed datasets, can amplify epistemic violence. However, to reject AI outright is to surrender the most powerful synthesizing tool ever invented.

 

Generative AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), is inherently a correlational engine. It sees patterns across 100,000 academic papers, oral history transcriptions, climatic datasets, and economic indices in milliseconds—a feat impossible for the singular human mind. Used critically, AI becomes the operational backbone of the 5-Dimensional Knowledge Production Framework:

 

· It can instantaneously translate ecological-biological data (dimension 1) into socioeconomic risk assessments (dimension 2), while simultaneously cross-referencing sociocultural taboos (dimension 3) that affect conservation, adjusting for temporal trends (dimension 4).

· In our proposed Extraversity, AI would not produce “answers” but connection-maps—visualizing the feedback loops between disciplines that human researchers habitually ignore.

 

The crucial caveat: AI is a mirror. If we feed it disciplinary fragmentation, it returns amplified nonsense. Therefore, we must train and prompt AI exclusively through the integrative logic of the 4DEF and the mantra “Everything is connected to everything else.” We must use AI to erase fragmentation by actively querying it to identify the “blind spots” between disciplines—the gaps where ecological collapse meets policy failure meets cultural decay. In this sense, AI is not the philosopher; it is the philosopher’s most powerful apprentice, ruthlessly exposing the artificiality of our academic borders so that we, the human sages, can rebuild the whole.

 

 

5. Two Foundational Principles

 

Any framework for integration must rest on explicit philosophical principles. We propose two:

 

5.1 “Beyond Scope Does Not Exist—Everything Is Connected to Everything Else”

 

This principle rejects the fundamental assumption of disciplinarity: that phenomena can be isolated, studied in abstraction, and understood without reference to their context. In reality, every phenomenon is embedded in a web of relations that extends infinitely outward. The “scope” of a discipline is an artificial boundary, not a feature of reality. To claim that something is “beyond scope” is to confess the inadequacy of the disciplinary lens, not to identify a genuine limit of inquiry.

 

This principle is echoed in systems thinking, ecological science, and indigenous knowledge traditions alike. The Tsavo study of 1982 demonstrated this profoundly: to understand the genocide of elephants and the simultaneous collapse of vegetation, one could not merely count animal corpses. One had to reach into the past, adopt techniques from forestry and botany, and integrate natural science with social science and the humanities. The trinity of sciences—Natural Science, Social Science, and the Arts—are not separate kingdoms. They are dimensions of a single, integrated human effort to understand reality.

 

5.2 “The Whole Is Greater than the Sum of Its Parts”

 

This ancient principle, articulated by Aristotle, finds renewed urgency in our age of fragmentation. When knowledge is broken into parts and studied in isolation, something essential is lost—the emergent properties, the feedback loops, the systemic dynamics that only appear at the level of the whole.

 

Integration designates the relations established throughout a research process between elements that were not previously related. Genuine transdisciplinary integrative research is concerned with coordinating different bodies of knowledge, identifying gaps, and understanding how to fill these gaps with appropriate methodology. The whole that emerges from such integration is not merely additive—it is transformative. New insights, new questions, and new solutions emerge that were not visible from any single disciplinary perspective.

 

 

6. The Law of Intellectual Survival: Integrate or Perish

 

For half a century, the grotesque metric of “Publish or Perish” has driven academics into narrower and narrower silos, rewarding trivial profundity while punishing those who dare to connect the dots. That era is over. The ecological, political, and epistemological emergencies of the 21st century demand a sterner, existential ultimatum:

 

INTEGRATE OR PERISH.

 

Let us be brutally clear about what “Perish” means in this context:

 

1. Intellectual Perish: The university, already philosophically blind, will descend into a glorified trade-school, producing technocrats who can optimize a machine but cannot ask why the machine exists. It will become a museum of dead knowledge, irrelevant to a civilization in crisis.

2. Ecological Perish: Without integrating the 4-Dimensional Environmental Framework, we will continue to solve climate feedback loops with purely economic or purely technological fixes, ignoring the sociocultural and temporal dimensions. This guarantees systemic collapse.

3. Civilizational Perish: As the “Timbuktu Phenomenon” warns, great intellectual traditions collapse when they become rigid, insular, and disconnected from the changing conditions of knowledge production. A university that abolishes its integrative core (philosophy) signs its own death warrant.

 

Conversely, “Integrate” means the active, relentless reconstruction of the whole. It means transforming every doctoral program into an interversal team-science project. It means demanding that every grant application explicitly maps its methodology onto the 5-Dimensional Knowledge Production Framework. It means using AI daily to shred the invisible walls between the natural sciences, social sciences, and the arts.

 

The old university has two choices: Voluntarily yield to the new Team Sciences Learning Centers (Interversity, Crossversity, Transversity, Extraversity) and reform from within, or be swept aside by a world that can no longer afford the luxury of fragmented thought.

 

 

7. Rephilosophising Knowledge and Education for Integration

 

The abolition of philosophy at Makerere is a symptom of a deeper malady: the de-philosophisation of knowledge itself. To resurrect the whole, we must rephilosophise—not by reinstating philosophy as one department among many, but by restoring philosophy as the organising logic for all knowledge production.

 

This means:

 

First, every discipline must be required to examine its own metaphysical assumptions, ethical implications, and epistemological foundations. No discipline generates its own first principles; those principles rest on philosophical commitments that must be made explicit and subject to critical scrutiny.

 

Second, the curriculum must be restructured around problems and questions, not disciplines. Wicked problems—climate change, pandemics, inequality, ecological collapse—do not respect departmental boundaries. Education must prepare students to think across dimensions, to hold contradictory truths, to see feedback loops across systems.

 

Third, UNESCO’s call to make Philosophy a cross-cutting and compulsory course must be heeded, but extended. Philosophy should not be a single course but the thread that runs through every course—the critical, reflective, integrative dimension of all learning.

 

Fourth, the Team Sciences Learning Centers—Interversity, Crossversity, Transversity, Extraversity—must be established, particularly in the periphery where integration is still a living practice. These centers should be organised around the 4-Dimensional Environmental Framework and the 5-Dimensional Knowledge Production Framework, embodying the principles that everything is connected and the whole is greater than its parts.

 

Fifth, we must reject the tyranny of scientism—the philosophical conviction in the “epistemic superiority of science and its right to impose its methods onto the territory of the humanities”. The systematic devaluation of the arts, humanities, and social sciences in favour of a narrowly defined, positivist science is profoundly anti-intellectual. It produces graduates who are skilled technicians but impoverished thinkers—de-intellectualised, stripped of the conceptual tools necessary for human judgment.

 

Sixth, we must deliberately harness Artificial Intelligence as a tool for erasing fragmentation. By training AI on integrated datasets and prompting it to identify cross-dimensional connections, we transform it from a mere information-retrieval system into an active agent of synthesis. AI becomes the cartographer that draws the hidden rivers of connection between isolated islands of knowledge.

 

 

8. Conclusion: The Phoenix, the Nile, and the Resurrection of the Whole

 

The abolition of the Department of Philosophy at Makerere is a stark harbinger. Yet, in the spirit of the phoenix, we declare this not an ending but a liberation. The discipline called “philosophy” is dead; long live Integrative Philosophy—the living, breathing act of synthesizing all knowledge for the survival and flourishing of life.

 

Just as the River Nile draws from disparate tributaries—the White Nile, the Blue Nile, the Atbara—to become a single, life-giving torrent that nourishes entire civilizations, so too must our knowledge systems converge. The Nile does not ask whether a drop originates from the mountains of Ethiopia or the lakes of Uganda; it simply integrates, flows, and gives life. Our epistemologies must learn the same lesson: the origin of knowledge is less important than its convergence toward the flourishing of the whole.

 

We have the tools: The 4-Dimensional Environmental Framework to ground us in reality; the 5-Dimensional Knowledge Production Framework to guide our methods; the Team Sciences Learning Centers (Interversity, Crossversity, Transversity, and Extraversity) to house our endeavors; and Artificial Intelligence as our tireless cartographer to erase the artificial borders we have built. We have the historical vindication of Aristotle, who never betrayed the whole. And we have the ultimate clarion call: Integrate or Perish.

 

The warning is urgent and historical. Timbuktu, once a vibrant center of learning with up to 25,000 students and a repository of thousands of manuscripts, declined precipitously after the Moroccan invasion of 1591, when scholars were exiled or executed. The “Timbuktu Phenomenon” refers to this vulnerability: the possibility that a great intellectual tradition can collapse when it becomes rigid, insular, and disconnected from the changing conditions of knowledge production. Universities failing to embrace integration risk suffering a similar fate.

 

Let us carry this manifesto from the periphery to the center. Let us rephilosophise knowledge and education, not by adding a department, but by demanding that every department become a philosopher. For beyond scope does not exist. Everything is connected. The whole is greater than its parts. And the time to act—to change, to integrate, to survive—is now.
