How can we predict book sales if we don’t have solid data on what genres are selling and where? In the West, publishers can rely on platforms like The Bookseller and Nielsen BookScan for insights. But in Africa, where do we turn for such crucial information?
For instance, does anyone even know how many publishing companies exist in Uganda? Would URSB be willing – and able – to share such data? I remember the frustration of my thesis research years ago when I studied the factors affecting trade book distribution in Uganda. I relied heavily on publishing research done by Professor Ikoja-Odongo, and a few other research papers on the nation’s reading culture. Other than that, I had to majorly base my thesis on the responses of my esteemed interviewees. Nearly a decade later, with a digital revolution upon us, there’s still a concerning lack of industry-wide data.
What data do trade book publishers rely on to make informed publishing decisions?
One of Africa’s biggest hurdles is the reluctance to share information. But this secrecy stifles industry growth. Imagine if all book professionals – publishers, authors, booksellers – pooled their knowledge to strengthen the market!
In this regard, I’m excited about what Africa Speaks is doing for Christian publishing. Their team has been gathering data directly from African booksellers and Christian publishers. I’m eagerly awaiting the full report of their findings! Their initiative could set a powerful precedent: Open data sharing can propel our publishing industry forward.
What are your thoughts? Should we, as an industry, do more to collect and share book market data? Let’s discuss!!
