Details of the looting happening at Uganda Airlines are dumbfounding.

Details of the looting happening at Uganda Airlines are dumbfounding.

The airline, for example, pays 20,000 Uganda Shillings (~$7) to the catering service provider for each bun (a small, round piece of bread) that is served during flights.

If you count everything that constitutes a meal, the bill can run to as high as 200,000 Uganda Shillings (~$60) for items that should ordinarily cost no more than 30,000 Uganda Shillings (~$9) per meal.

This model of embezzlement by inflation of costs applies to all service providers.

The airline managers (who already earn some of the most lucrative salaries, even by global standards) receive a cut from the service providers. The syndicate is all-round.

There is no fear of financial collapse because Uganda Airlines will simply cry “patriotism” and ask for a bailout from our unquestioning Parliament.

In this sense, we have no national carrier. It’s a conduit for unjust enrichment and highest level, obscene corruption for the ruling family and its enablers.
