KAMPALA, UGANDA In a historic milestone for the country’s creative industries, the inaugural Uganda One Festival successfully took center stage at the Kololo Independence Grounds under the unifying theme, “We Are One.” Organized by SBL Media in a landmark partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development (MGLSD), Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS), and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), the two-day flagship exhibition has officially redefined how Uganda views, values, and commercializes its cultural wealth.

Far from just an entertainment gala, the festival served as a vibrant marketplace, structural classroom, and national stage rolled into one. It brought together thousands of creatives, tech innovators, policy makers, and cultural enthusiasts to transform raw artistic passion into a sustainable economic engine.

Mapping the Creative Economy in The 9 Domains. The heartbeat of the festival was structured around nine distinct pillars, highlighting the sheer breadth of Ugandan talent and innovation:
- Sound: Live musical performances and DJ sets paired with vital industry dialogues regarding artist royalties and copyright laws.
- Movement: A dynamic display of live dance, traditional theater, comedy, and powerful spoken word poetry.
- Creativity: Visual arts exhibitions featuring live painting, fine art galleries, photography, and sculpture.
- Stories: Cinema spaces showcasing local Ugandan films and documentaries, alongside meet-and-greets with local directors.
- Words: Literary pavilions celebrating Ugandan authors, independent publishers, and contemporary magazines.
- Style: Immersive fashion runways putting local haute couture, street fashion, and rich textile designs on global display.
- Innovation & Tech: Interactive hubs for young tech startups, digital applications, and creative software developers.
- Cultural Heritage: A bustling food and cultural village where attendees sampled authentic regional cuisines and explored tribal traditions.
- Creative Support Services: On-site legal clinics, marketing workshops, and financial management tools tailored specifically for artists.

Bridging Art and Economic Empowerment What set the Uganda One Festival apart was its direct focus on the financial survival of the local artist. With government backers present, the festival served as a primary conduit for creatives to learn how to access dedicated financial resources—including the government’s 30-billion Ugandan Shilling visual sector fund. Furthermore, legal giants like the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) set up physical, accessible hubs right on the festival grounds. Here, grassroot artisans, musicians, and filmmakers walked in with uncopyrighted work and walked out with registered intellectual property, securing their rights to future earnings and copyright protection. It was an open, family-inclusive ecosystem.

While adults networked with corporate investors and international buyers, children enjoyed dedicated creative spaces like the Uganda Little Hands Go Green Kids’ Zone, ensuring the next generation is equally inspired.

The Future Moving forward, the Uganda One Festival is transitioning into an expanded annual format designed to reach every corner of the country. To ensure no talent is left behind, organizers have launched localized Regional Activations across major urban hubs. Roadshows, auditions, and craft previews will travel through Gulu, Mbarara, Arua, and Mbale, scouting the finest regional talent. These sub-regional showcases will ultimately converge in Kampala for future main edition festivals, creating a truly unified national creative network. Uganda’s creative sector is no longer just a hobby it is officially open for business.
