Dr. Adv. Smith Kiiza: A Journey of Law, Scholarship, Justice and Service
There are careers that are built around a profession, and there are journeys that become a lifelong commitment to serving society. For Dr. Adv. Smith Kiiza, the law has become more than a profession. It has become a platform for education, justice, human rights, research and community empowerment.
Dr. Kiiza is a Ugandan advocate, international lawyer, legal scholar, lecturer, researcher and author whose professional interests extend across Uganda, Africa and the international legal community. His work reflects a strong belief that access to justice should not be reserved for those who can afford it, and that legal education should ultimately contribute to the transformation of society.
His academic journey has taken him through different legal traditions and jurisdictions. He holds a PhD in Law from Shoolini University in India, where his doctoral research focused on the rights of accused persons through a comparative study of India and Uganda. He also holds postgraduate qualifications in Business Law from the University of California, Davis School of Law in the United States, as well as postgraduate studies in Criminal Law and Human Rights Law from India.
His academic and professional experience has included university teaching, legal practice, legal research and public service. Through teaching and mentorship, Dr. Kiiza has worked with students and professionals in areas including Public International Law, Comparative Commercial Law, Criminal Law, Human Rights, Intellectual Property, Islamic Banking and Finance, and other areas of contemporary legal practice.
One of the areas that has increasingly defined his work is Restorative Justice. Dr. Kiiza has been involved in promoting restorative justice as an approach that can complement conventional justice systems by focusing not only on punishment, but also on accountability, healing, reconciliation and the restoration of relationships affected by crime and conflict.
Through restorative justice training initiatives, he has worked to bring together lawyers, judicial officers, prosecutors, police officers, prison officers, social workers, counsellors, academics, students, religious leaders and civil society actors. His vision is to contribute to the development of a stronger restorative justice framework in Uganda and across Africa.
Dr. Kiiza is also an author and researcher. His writing reflects his interest in law, justice, governance, human rights, commercial law and emerging legal challenges. He has authored numerous books and research papers and continues to encourage young lawyers and students to approach legal education as a tool for solving real problems in society.
Beyond courtrooms and lecture rooms, his work demonstrates a commitment to community empowerment. He believes that a legal system is strongest when ordinary people understand their rights, can access legal assistance and have confidence in institutions of justice.
His professional philosophy can be summarized in one principle: law should serve humanity.
As Uganda and Africa continue to confront complex challenges involving access to justice, human rights, technology, crime, governance and social inequality, professionals such as Dr. Smith Kiiza remind us that the role of a lawyer can extend far beyond litigation.
It can involve teaching.
It can involve research.
It can involve writing.
It can involve mentoring the next generation.
It can involve standing with vulnerable communities.
And, ultimately, it can involve helping society find better and more humane ways of resolving conflict.
Dr. Adv. Smith Kiiza’s journey therefore represents more than individual professional achievement. It is a continuing journey of law, scholarship, justice and service—with a vision of using legal knowledge not simply to interpret the law, but to help transform lives and strengthen communities.
