Academic Scholarship: The systematic production of new knowledge within a disciplinary field, governed by formalized methods, peer review, and primarily communicated to other specialists. Its ultimate goal is the advancement of understanding within the field.
· Public Scholarship: The practice of translating specialized knowledge for a general audience, engaging with public issues, and often aiming to have a direct impact on public discourse, policy, or civic life. Its goal is accessibility and societal impact.
Dimensions of Academic Scholarship
The Primary Goal of academic scholarship is to advance knowledge within a discipline; contribute to academic conversation. Inform, engage, and impact public discourse and understanding. The Ideal Audience consists of peers (plus other scholars, students in the field). The educated public, policymakers, practitioners, journalists may be involved. The dimensions of Academic Scholarship are given below:
1. Currency and Reward Peer recognition. Measured by citations, prestigious publications, grants, and tenure. Public influence and reach. Measured by audience engagement, media pickup, policy change, and public dialogue.
2. Method of Dissemination: Peer-reviewed journals, academic presses, conferences. Op-eds, blogs, magazines (e.g., The Atlantic), podcasts, public talks, social media, and documentaries.
3. Language and Style Specialized jargon, technical, qualifies claims, cites extensively, often dense. Accessible, narrative-driven, minimizes jargon, prioritizes clarity and engagement.
4. Standard of Validation Peer review. Rigorous scrutiny by experts for methodological soundness and contribution to the field. Public intelligibility & resonance. Logical coherence, credibility of the scholar, and connection to lived experience are often validated by diverse audiences.
5. Temporality Slow. Research and review can take years. Seeks enduring contributions. Fast. Often responds to current events, news cycles, and timely debates.
6. Epistemology (Theory of Knowledge) Knowledge is built incrementally, through contested, specialised debate. Depth over breadth. Knowledge is a public good that must be translated and connected to broader contexts. Values synthesis and relevance.
Synergies and Tensions
There are synergies and tensions between academic scholarship and public scholarship. The synergies are:
1. Informed Engagement: Public scholarship is most robust when it draws on deep academic expertise. The best public scholars are often top-tier academics.
2. Accountability & Relevance: Public engagement can ground academic work in real-world problems, preventing insularity. It can also reveal new research questions.
3. Funding & Legitimacy: Public impact is increasingly valued by universities and funders (e.g., “broader impacts” criteria).
Tensions:
There are tensions between academic scholarship and public scholarship
1· The “Translation” Problem: Simplifying complex ideas risks distortion. Academics may fear “dumbing down” or losing nuance.
2· Incentive Misalignment: Time spent on public writing is often not spent on peer-reviewed publications, which are the currency of academic promotion (though this is slowly changing).
3· Tone & Certainty: Academic writing thrives on caveats; public writing often requires clearer, more confident statements to be persuasive. This can feel intellectually uncomfortable.
4· Audience Criticism: Peers may see public work as “popularisation” or self-promotion, lacking intellectual rigour. The public may see academic work as irrelevant or obscurantist.
A Spectrum, Not a Binary
It is most accurate to see these as overlapping modes on a spectrum. Many scholars strive to do both:
1. The “Translator”: Does deep academic work, then writes a trade book or gives TED Talks.
2. The “Public Intellectual”: Engages primarily in public debate but is grounded in academic training (e.g., Timothy Snyder, Naomi Klein).
3. The “Engaged Scholar”: Whose research process itself involves collaboration with communities (Participatory Action Research), blending the two from the start.
Expounding Public Scholarship
Public Scholarship involves the creation of circulation of knowledge to address issues of public concern increase public knowledge of contribute to the public good. It tends to be shared in publicly availablemodesod contexts like podcasts, websites and community forums.
Often, public scholarship involves mutually beneficial partnerships between higher education and organisations in the public sector. However, retired academics eager to contribute to public education or knowledge and thereby remain visible and relevant outside the Ivory Tower can connect themselves to different publishing media nationally, regionally and globally and remain academically and intellectually productive for public consumption.
Universities can actually use public education and/or scholarship to officially connect with the public. At least two higher institutions of higher learning on the globe have taken public scholarship seriously: Bates University and Carleton College. For example, Carleton College has a public scholarship program, which aims to foster conversations about public scholarship across the campus. If provides resources and support to faculty engaged in public scholarship
Public scholarship achieves the following in public education:
1. Enhancing research, relative activu and public knowledge.
2. Enhancing conversation, teaching and learning.
3. Preparing engaged and adequately educated citizens.
4. Strengthening democratic values and civic responsibility.
5. Addressing a x helping to solve critical social problems, including the ones called wicked problems, which cannot be solved by disciplinary knowledge, practice and techniques, but require new knowledge production systems
6. Contributing to the public good.
7. Promoting and sustaining public intellectualism and public debate.
8. Inclusion of students in engaged research and scholarship
9. Promoting critical thinking and alternative Analysis.
How the new knowledge production systems can enhance public scholarship
Crossdisciplinarity, Interdisciplinarity, Transdisciplinarity, and Extradisciplinarity are the new knowledge production systems mentioned elsewhere in their article. They are described below:
– Crossdisciplinarity: Involves combining knowledge and methods from different disciplines to create new insights.
– Interdisciplinarity: Integrates multiple disciplines to address complex problems, fostering collaboration and innovation.
– Transdisciplinarity: Transcends disciplinary boundaries, incorporating non-academic perspectives and knowledge to address real-world issues.
– Extradisciplinarity: Engages with external stakeholders, incorporating diverse knowledge and practices to co-create solutions.
Enhancing Public Scholarship
– Broader Perspectives: These approaches foster diverse perspectives, enriching public discourse and scholarship.
– Increased Relevance: Addressing real-world issues and incorporating non-academic knowledge enhances relevance and impact.
– Collaborative Solutions: Encourages co-creation of knowledge, fostering solutions that are more inclusive and effective.
– Improved Communication: Translates complex ideas across disciplinary and societal boundaries, enhancing public engagement.
Examples and Applications
Let me give examples of issues of public concern that will benefit from public scholarship.
– Climate Change: Interdisciplinary research informs public policy and engagement.
– Public Health: Transdisciplinary approaches address social determinants of health, enhancing community engagement.
-Environmental Conservation and Management. All four knowledge production systems will contribute immensely to solving problems in environmental conservation and management
– *Education*: Extradisciplinary collaborations improve educational outcomes, incorporating community knowledge and practices.
By embracing the new knowledge production systems, public scholarship can become more inclusive, relevant, and impactful, fostering a more informed and engaged public.
Climate Change. Interdisciplinary research combining climate science, economics, and social justice informs public policy and engagement. For instance, the University of Cape Town’s Climate Change Research Group brings together experts from various fields to develop climate resilience strategies.
Public Health: Transdisciplinary approaches address social determinants of health, enhancing community engagement. Uganda’s Makerere University’s School of Public Health collaborates with local communities to develop health programs addressing social and economic factors.
Education: Extradisciplinary collaborations improve educational outcomes, incorporating community knowledge and practices. In Uganda, organisations like Educate! work with schools and communities to develop entrepreneurship and leadership skills.
These examples show how crossdisciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and extradisciplinary approaches enhance public scholarship, fostering impact and relevance.
Conclusion
Academic scholarship and public scholarship may be likened to Siamese twins, who are, unfortunately, kept apart because of the dominance of disciplinary, currently the dominant knowledge production system (the other knowledge production systems, which have been gaining in currency this century, are: interdisciplinarity, crossdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity and extradisciplinarity). The other knowledge production systems are sometimes called ” the new and different knowledge production systems. They are more tolerant to public scholarship than disciplinary. The core contrast between academic scholarship and public scholarship is between knowledge production for the discipline and knowledge translation and engagement for society. Both are vital. Academic scholarship ensures depth, rigor, and the slow accumulation of truth. Public scholarship ensures that knowledge escapes the ivory tower, fosters an informed citizenry, and addresses pressing human concerns. The health and vibrancy of a society depend on a dynamic ecosystem where the two forms of scholarship inform, challenge, and enrich each other. There is promise in the new and different knowledge production systems that forge such a dynamic ecosystem. Unfortunately, most universities of the world are still resistant to the new and different knowledge production systems. This way, they are sabotaging a healthy relationship between academic scholarship and public scholarship. Yet such a relationship is needed for our more open global village now communicatively nourished by the Worldwide We (Internet) and AI.
