Your hair curl pattern has nothing to do with how “good” or “bad” your hair is

When Muwado asks if I have an interesting story to tell, I always feel like I never do, but what I do have is information that I would like to share and today I will talk about hair.

Somewhere along the way, Africans were taught that we have “bad hair” and that straight, silky hair is “good hair.” And we all need to unlearn this.

Yes, different hair types and curl patterns have different characteristics. Tighter curls tend to have more bends along the hair shaft, which can make it harder for natural oils to travel from the scalp down the length of the hair. This can contribute to dryness and make some types of hair more vulnerable to breakage.

But that does not make the hair bad. Your curl pattern does not determine whether your hair can: Look healthy, Look fresh and beautiful, Retain length, Be soft and manageable, Grow long, Be styled in different ways, things like moisture, porosity, breakage, scalp health, handling, products and your overall hair-care routine matter much more when it comes to how your hair looks and behaves.

A person with very tight coils can have incredibly healthy, long, beautiful hair. A person with straight hair can have extremely damaged, dry, breaking hair. So stop looking at someone else’s curl pattern and concluding that they simply have “better hair.” Your hair is not bad. You may simply not have learnt how to care for the hair you have. Understand your hair.

Learn how it responds to moisture. Understand its porosity. Reduce unnecessary manipulation. Protect it from excessive heat and tension. Keep your scalp healthy. Choose plant based and natural haircare And most importantly, learn to appreciate the hair that grows from your own head. Haircare should start with understanding your hair, not fighting it. #haircare #naturalproducts
