My only prayer for anyone who defies traditional limitations is that they win in this life.

I wanted Gahizi to win his wife and mother to his side. I wanted them to finally accept him and join him on this new path and dream he had for them. But like the folk song performance I once took part in (while in primary school) dictates: ekibi kuno ku nsi tekibonyabonya omu. Kibonyaabonya akikola, kibonyabonya ensi, kibonyaabonya nnyoko, kitaawo ne mikwaano gyo, ssaako ne bagandabo, ne Ggwanga neriyiikayo.

Sin in this world does not hurt only one person. It hurts the one who commits it. It hurts the world. It hurts your mother, your father, and your friends. It also hurts your siblings, and even the nation bears the consequences.

I read the last 2 chapters of We are Safest Among Our People’s Book 1 while having breakfast in a restaurant. I read Gahizi’s words of regret and plea for his mother’s life to be saved so that someone remains behind to raise his son. My eyes welled up. My chest tightened. I could feel a lump in my throat. Even with the most recent suggestion made by the mother to 3 of our Ugandan celebrities – that to grieve loudly is to be local, I wanted to fall to my knees and cry for Gahizi.

What hadn’t he done? Of what use is it to be loyal to someone you have to sell your value to?

Gahizi had a dream. One that would propel his family to wealth and dignity amongst the royals. I wanted him to win but the events that led to his death made me wish he did not shun his mother’s warnings.

I want to report the author to the police. Gahizi had to live to see his dream come to pass.

I want vengeance against Gatera.
