How One Ugandan Engineer is Using AI to Fight Sickle Cell Disease and Shape 6G Networks

For over half a century, Bibian Amito watched her mother fight a quiet, grueling battle with sickle cell disease. While Amito built a promising career as a telecommunications engineer, a deeper question personal to her family structure lingered. How can the power of technology be harnessed to relieve human suffering? Amito knew that data held the key to unlocking better medical outcomes and smarter network infrastructures, but she faced a steep hurdle—bridging the gap between traditional engineering and the highly specialized world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

The turning point arrived when Amito enrolled at Refactory Academy. Seeking to demystify the complex mathematics and algorithmic foundations behind modern technologies, she found an intensive tech skilling environment that became the ultimate catalyst for her career pivot.

“The experience was transformative,” Amito recalls. “One of the most impactful aspects was gaining an in-depth understanding of the mathematical and statistical principles behind AI and ML models. This deepened my appreciation of how models work beyond just implementation.”

Testing a battery of machine learning architectures – including Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and Support Vector Machines – she successfully proved that a Gradient Boosting model could optimize performance, achieving a milestone model accuracy of 0.52 on real-world network data.

Transitioning into an AI specialist within a demanding, male-dominated ecosystem requires more than just academic fortitude; it requires unwavering mentorship. Amito credits her mother and brother as her foundational support system, alongside rigorous academic guidance from university lecturers and industry colleagues. By conducting extensive community outreach, she collects grass-roots qualitative and quantitative insights to ensure her platforms are entirely user-centered.

For Amito, entering the tech frontier is a platform for profound representation and regional transformation. “Whenever I feel overwhelmed or uncertain, I remind myself why I started—that my work is not just about technology, but about creating meaningful impact, opening doors for others, and proving that there is space for women to lead and innovate in this field.”
