Okello Onyum was asked whether he could see the screen on which CCTV footage was going to be played and he said he couldn’t. He was moved right behind the Police officer who played the footage.
This has reminded me of the day in 2024 when I discovered who it was that had turned my bag into his ATM for about two months. Lucky for him, on many of these occasions, I wasn’t so sure of the exact amount of money I had on me but a rough estimate often showed something was off.
The day he fumbled was when he took $100 off the total I had. The bosses of the place got notified that night. And as odd as he was, he is the very person who volunteered to call them. He was my “gango”. The only person I told, “I think someone touched my bag but I’m not sure”, a month before. He was shocked and disappointed.
The day he took that dollar bill, it was just he and I in the space. I placed the total amount in the book I was reading at the time. Just a few notes. I barely walked away from my desk. In fact, even after the day, I knew the rough estimate of the hours at which I moved away from my station.
While on the call with a new psychologist I intended to work with, I decided to distract myself while flipping the book pages. It is then that I saw that my money was short. Most people had already gone to their homes. I called my “gango” and told him what I’d just noticed. This time, it wasn’t a suspicion. I knew for sure someone touched my bag. He offered to come back. I thought he wouldn’t but he did. I thought he was going to profusely apologise but he instead decided to wear the investigator hat that could barely fit him because he asked the dumbest questions that made me walk away from him. In that, I was giving him a chance to play mind games. I wanted him to put it back while I’m away. He failed to read the room.
I returned and stayed silent. He asked questions that I stopped responding to, until he asked if he should notify the bosses.
Please do!
Mf did. Talking about how Nabuguzi is saying someone stole her money.
The boss decided to call me. I told him about it all and said he would have the cameras checked.
Meanwhile, this chap had told me that the cameras are just for formality – they don’t work. I knew he had played his cards right but the boss offering to have them checked is where I knew this chap was just trying to derail me from looking for answers.
The following day I arrived earlier than usual. No one expected me that early, and as fate would have it, while I talked to one of my colleagues, telling him about what happened, the camera person arrived. The thief walked in right after him but made a U-turn when he saw me.
He came back right after the camera recording showed him picking money from my bag. What shocked me was him asking the technician to play it back so that he can also see.
As of today, Onyum has just watched his movements recorded between 1st April – 2 April. Perhaps the information he wasn’t privy to was the Wentz Medical Centre camera recording showing the children being rushed in.
