Yesterday, I had the privilege of moderating a very insightful panel discussion with key players in Uganda’s animation industry.
As someone who has not interacted extensively with animators, illustrators, and professionals from that field, I learned a great deal about both the challenges and opportunities within the industry. Much like filmmaking, animation involves many professionals across pre-production, production, and post-production, all working together to bring projects to life.
One of the strongest themes that emerged from the discussion was the importance of collaboration. The panelists emphasized that partnerships are essential in addressing some of the industry’s biggest challenges, especially the execution of costly projects, strengthening government and private sector support, and forming associations that can champion the common interests of animators in Uganda.
About the coming of Ai, the animators had divided opinions between perfecting the craft so that your work stands out so well to give distinguishing difference with Ai work or learning to incorporate Ai tools in the work animators are doing.
It was truly an honor to share the room with such brilliant minds as Richard Musinguzi (the man behind Katoto), Raymond Malinga (the creative force behind Kizazi Moto), Aliguma Mugisha, Lubega, and Maria Byoma. Their passion, vision, and commitment to the growth of the industry were inspiring.
I am particularly excited about the ground-breaking conversations around the formation of an Animators Guild/Association, and I look forward to seeing the action plans that will emerge from these discussions.
The attendees also expressed great appreciation to Uganda Communications Commission for intentionally creating space for animators and recognising them during a national festival. Mr. Leonard Amanya, representing UCC, reassured the audience that even more opportunities are in the pipeline for animators in Uganda.
