Ani DiFranco, 32 Flavours and then some…

The first time I listened to 32 flavors by Ani DiFranco, I was short for breathe, it was so fragile, so perfect, so true, her words my goodness . . .

both my parents taught me about good will
and I have done well by their names
just the kindness I’ve lavished on strangers
is more than I can explain
still there’s many who’ve turned out their porch lights
just so I would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
till I’d passed and left them alone

My best singers are usually female, they get me or I get them. I identify with their rage and melancholy and even love sometimes (Open arms by Tracy Chapman anyone?). It could be  some shared camaraderie as a fellow woman maybe?

I do not know why I am into the kind of music I am into, I talk to cool people (by my standards of course) that define themselves by the riot sounds of punk rock or rap or techno and I wonder why I am not like them ( I am always wondering about things I might never get answers to) so when Ani sang . . .

and God help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom

cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and God help you if you are a phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back’

The words were a revelation to me, like a single piece to this complex puzzle that is life.

She is a terrific singer, I have gone on to love more of her work, one song in particular with the distinct title “Untouchable face” saw me through  the worst and hopefully only heart break of my life (huh? As if). I don’t know if when she was composing the lyrics she hoped they would cure some random ‘mukiiga’ girl of a heart break, but its music, its art you get what you can from it.

So I thought dear readers that I should share some of this beauty with you, many thanks to www.muwado.com for being so kind ergo we can learn and share with each other. And by the way, if you are the kind of person that loves and respects the kind of woman this song has in mind, then you my friend get it and you deserve a beer 🙂

Give my girl Ani, a listening chance, she tells it like it is. Then please be kind enough to tell us how you found her in the comments below.
