10 movies to check out this …tine’s season.

Hey guys, I have put together a small list of touchy feely love stories for this Valentine’s season in case you were lost for options or thought you had watched them all. It is a list comprised of western films covering the topic of love. While most are romantic comedies (romcoms) some are simply tales of love in their different capacity and are just pretty good movies. Also, they aren’t ranked from best to worst, they are simply a small compilation and you are all free to add suggestions in the comment section for others to catch one you feel everyone should watch this season or maybe just once in their lifetime.

1 – Serendipity

What happens when you decide to let fate choose whether you and your favourite person will get to be together. In this 2001 classic our main characters meet and fall in love over the course of one night but because they are both already in relationships, decide to let fate choose whether they should pursue a relationship. Brilliantly written and produced this movie is a whirlwind of emotions as we infuriatingly watch these people try to find their one true love.

2 – Coming to America

Another timeless classic starring Eddie murphy in his prime. The premise of this movie is a template many secretly fantasize about. An African prince on a quest for true love travels to New York city and under the guise of a poor cleaner tries to court the city’s finest. And yes, I’d imagine many of you wish that your partner was just playing a game to find out whether you’re with them just for the money and were actually rich royals waiting to surprise you this valentines’. Godspeed to you my people. A solid watch for those looking to get a good laugh with a beautiful love story.

3 – Before Sunrise

I think the simplest story on this list and my personal favourite, Before Sunrise has a cast of only two and we get a fly-on-the-wall experience of what an amazing date looks like. The idea is that the couple in question has a day to their next train and decide to take a walk in Vienna till their departure. Quite the unconventional movie, it really is just the two of them talking and slowly falling in love, none of the extra plots and characters of other stories you are used to. So if you are a fan of deep intimate but simple stories, this is the one for you. Ohh and there are two that came after this…Before Sunset & Before Midnight.

4 – The best man

Scandalous, in the reunion of college friends during the wedding of one of their own, skeletons in the closet are pulled out in this romantic comedy. Friendships are put to the test, relationships are shaken and a wedding hangs in the balance. A beautifully made black Hollywood classic with exceptional performances across the board. Definitely worth a watch.

5 – When Harry met Sally.

The ultimate will they, won’t they story of best friends who put to question, can a girl and a guy be best friends and nothing more? We see the evolution of a relationship that we can painfully tell has the potential to be more but is holding out on itself. The humour and charm brought to the story by the actors once again holds up despite this film being 34 years old. A great movie to watch especially if you are in a “situationship” with your bestie…wink wink.

6 – Before we go

Yes, there is a lot of Before somethings’ on this list but I guess it’s a pattern of successful romcoms. Pick a leaf filmmakers. Anywho, just like the “Before trilogy” this movie is based on two people moving through a city and trying to get to their respective destinations and along the way learn some interesting things about each other and gradually fall in love. Not only starring Chris Evans but this also being his directorial debut it turns out to be a cute and beautifully made story.

7 – The breakup.

Well, I could not make a list of romance movies without some teary ones too, in this movie we are forced to slowly watch a relationship fall apart wondering whether they will fix their issues and make it through. Kinda like an anti-romcom it still hits the funny buttons but it is also painful to watch and see a reflection of something that has happened to many of our own relationships.

8 – Love actually.

A series of interconnected love stories with an anthology-like structure, we see multiple shapes and forms of love from friendships, to hidden passions and even the “that-worked?” love stories. With a stellar cast of British actors all in their prime and bringing all the chops to pull off one of the greatest films of the genre.

9 – Notting hill

How many women do you know would be willing to date a man who not only earns less than them but also isn’t famous? In this story we get to see what that would look like and whether it can actually work. Julia Roberts brings her charm to this movie and makes us question our own perception of the influence of money and fame in a relationship dynamic.

10 – Three thousand years of longing

A magical movie about the relationships of an immortal djinn and how he paid for loving people. Hand picked from the tales of the Arabian Nights, this movie lets us in on the tragic tales of this one fantastical creature that dared to love. Truly a marvel in storytelling.
