UGANDA FILMMAKERS SACCO PLANS COLLECTIVE INVESTMENT

Saturday, 13th June marked another significant milestone for the Uganda Filmmakers SACCO as members gathered to reflect on progress, explore new opportunities, and shape the future of the cooperative.

For those of us who witnessed its humble beginnings in 2023, the growth has been remarkable. I still remember the first meeting behind the National Theatre, where a small group of filmmakers came together in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The shared dream was simple but powerful: to create a financial support system where filmmakers could save together, invest together, and access affordable loans tailored to the realities of our industry.

Seeing more than 30 members in attendance this past Saturday and welcoming 17 new members into the SACCO was a proud and fulfilling moment. What started as a conversation among a handful of passionate individuals is steadily transforming into a movement capable of launching multimillion-shilling investment projects for the benefit of its members.

The meeting was led by the administrative committee elected last year to serve a four-year term. In just its first year, the committee has made notable progress by developing strategies to grow membership, encouraging a culture of consistent saving, positioning the SACCO to benefit from the UGX 100 million Creative Revolving Fund allocation, and actively involving members in deciding future investment priorities.

Among the exciting proposals discussed were establishing a film locations studio and warehouse, creating a wellness centre for industry professionals, and exploring other ventures that can generate sustainable returns while strengthening Uganda’s film ecosystem.

The vision does not stop here. The next phase is to extend the Uganda Filmmakers SACCO to every region of the country, giving filmmakers nationwide the opportunity to become members and enjoy the benefits of collective saving, investment, and financial empowerment.

The journey has only just begun, and if the momentum continues, the SACCO could become one of the most transformative initiatives for Uganda’s creative industry.
