Uganda’s film industry continues to gain momentum as key stakeholders unite to build a stronger, more sustainable creative sector.
Yesterday, the Producers Guild Uganda (PGU), led by President Matthew Nabwiso, held a significant engagement with the National Planning Authority, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, and the Uganda National Cultural Centre to discuss creating an enabling environment for Uganda’s film and creative industries.
The meeting marked an important step in strengthening collaboration between filmmakers and government institutions, with discussions centered on strategic interventions to drive the growth and development of Uganda’s cinema landscape.
Key priorities identified include:
- Developing a National Film Policy
- Establishing a Uganda Film Commission
- Creating a National Film Fund
- Building filmmakers’ capacity
- Strengthening regional film associations and festivals
- Establishing regional film hubs across the country
The discussions reflected a shared recognition of film and the creative economy’s potential to drive national development; creating jobs, boosting economic growth, preserving Uganda’s cultural heritage, and giving Ugandan stories a platform to reach audiences at home and abroad.
The commitment shown by government partners signals a new chapter of collaboration and optimism for the industry. What began as a conversation is now becoming a collective movement toward a sustainable, structured, and globally competitive Ugandan film sector.
With continued partnership between government, industry leaders, and creatives, Ugandan cinema is steadily moving toward a future where filmmakers are empowered, stories are amplified, and the country’s creative potential is fully realised.
