I recently watched a documentary on Youtube “Globesity; Fat’s New frontier” about the Global Obesity crisis and at so many points all I could do was shake my head, cry a little and Pray for the World, it really hit me hard. This is not just about weight. It’s about what we eat, what we teach, and what we allow to become normal in our families.
Where as it covered different continents, Africa wasn’t covered I guess since we are still fighting with hunger and Malnutrition down this side but did you know that that is what the initial fight was even for countries like USA and Mexico that now struggle greatly with Obesity,
As incomes rise, urban lifestyles change and diets shift from fresh, home-cooked meals to processed, sugary, and fatty foods. Corporations aggressively market these products as modern and convenient. The result? Families everywhere including ours are eating more of what’s profitable, not what’s healthy. There is always a new snack or Sugar drink on the market. By 2010, around 500 million people were already obese. The numbers are still climbing and could surpass one billion by 2030. That is in only 5 years time over 12% of the World population will be Obese
Watching Globesity forced me to reflect on my own habits and the quiet messages we send to our children every day.
Children don’t just hear what we say they copy what we do. If we drink soda daily, snack mindlessly, or rarely eat together as a family, that becomes their version of “normal.”
I have been lucky enough that am now a mindful eater and when I tell you my 10 year Old doesn’t take soda or eat sweets and cakes in the evening/night and always asks me about the nutrients in the food we are eating, you might wonder how we got here, it has been years of exposure and intentionality and me telling him each time I bought him a soda that it was unhealthy so it is very possible and doable.
Children’s brains are being conditioned. Habits are being wired. What they see, they absorb and once habits form early, they’re hard to unlearn later in life. That’s why the fight against obesity cannot start in hospitals. It starts at the dinner table. It starts in the home. It starts with parents making better decisions consistently, not perfectly. Parents decide what food is served in a home so we control majority of the eating habits formed by our children who stay home for the first at least 18 years of their lives.
As parents, we are both protectors and examples. The most dangerous illusion is thinking “it won’t happen to us.” Many families in the film didn’t notice how serious things were until diabetes or heart disease appeared in a child. Imagine a child of 9 years being prediabetic and taking diabetic medicine by the age of 13 years. These are innocent souls that we are slowly killing ourselves. We need to move from reacting to preventing. From “I’ll fix it later” to “I’ll start now.” Time is really running out for the World
That means being intentional choosing water over soda, packing fruit instead of processed snacks, having children help prepare meals, eating together rather than separately in front of screens.
Globesity shows that the world is drowning in cheap calories but starving for real nourishment.
If we want a different outcome for our children, we must redefine “normal.”
Start small:
- Cook one more meal at home this week.
- STOP BUYING SODA FOR YOUR CHILDREN
- Take your children to the garden or market and let them choose produce.
- Swap one processed snack for something natural and whole.
- Reduce the Packaged options as food for your children
- Talk openly about food and health without judgment.
If enough families do that, culture shifts.
We can’t wait for governments or corporations to fix the food system. The revolution has to begin at home at the grassroots where the next generation learns what “healthy” really means. Teach Your Children better. Expose them to More Wholesome Living, Teach them about the dangers of the snacks and sugary drinks they may love so Much.
