Today, the spotlight is on the impact of technology on work as we knew it which was one of the key topics discussed during the ACCA Africa Members Conference held in Mombasa, Kenya.

Following a recent survey, 80% of accounting professionals prefer the hybrid mode of working which implies that they will inevitably require tools that enable them to remain connected to their teams / clients during instances when they have to deliver their mandate remotely.

The reality is that there is no organisation that can outrun technology. The forward-looking thing to do is review the organisation’s operations to identify the routine tasks that can be automated so that personnel concentrate on the more strategic tasks that require critical thinking and analysis.

Next steps that all organisations should take to keep on track with their technology journey include:

– Institutionalising digital rituals which includes providing guidelines to be considered by all their personnel on usage of digital tools.

– Reducing “digital noise” which predominantly includes having too many tools each carrying out a few tasks instead of consolidating more functions into fewer tools.

– Deliberate training of their personnel on the tools that have been adopted to enable their utilisation and unlock the intended efficiencies.

The long-term success of all organisations will depend on how well they adopt the use of technology as an enabler in delivering their mandate faster and with less resources being expended.
