Dear African Internet,
Hope you are having a happy 2020 sofar. We are here with news that will brighten it up some more.
In 2015 we run the original #MuwadoLoveLetter competition and it was a resounding success. This competition produced 35 love letters that took different forms, courtesy of the creative license submitters where given. Poems, short stories, not so short stories, a friend zone type letter, a few dark onesā¦The eventual winner, Guardian Angle, by Dennis Assimwe was a long read that took on story format and had a rather interesting twist that had several spectators singing praises for its creativity.
This 2020, we are bringing the campaign back and we promise it will be a constant on our annual timetable which we shall grow as the Muwado platform grows. Love must be celebrated properly. It was initially a Valentineās Day competition but we are expanding it into a Love Month campaign so it will run through the month of February.
With this edition of the campaign, we have a number of partners that will be joining us to reward participants. These partners included Jumia Food, Rogers Bites and other we are still in discussion with (if you know anyone that might be interested, let us know). Join me in giving them a round of applause for supporting the cause of love.
To participate, these are the simple steps you will have to follow:
Step 1:
You can start submitting your entry on the 1st of February. We donāt want to dictate how you express your love so choose whatever format you want to go with (an actual letter to a loved one/child/friend/object, a video, audio, poem, rant, fiction story…)
Step 2:
If you havenāt already done it, create an account on Muwado. If you are in class and already have an account, simply login.
Step 3:
Go to the Submit page and start uploading your love missive. In order for it to be recognised as an entry, MAKE SURE the tag #MuwadoLoveLetter20 comes right before the title of your post, like we have done with this one. If this is not done, your post will NOT be considered.
NOTE:
- You can always edit the post if there is something youād like to add/remove.
- Extra points for you if you submit using any of the other post formats apart from written stories which is the default for most Muwado users.
- If submission gives you a hard time (our beta platform still has some bugs), email us your submission [email protected] and weāll upload it for you.
Step 4:
Come Wednesday, February 26th at midnight, the submission window will be closed and anything submitted after that will not be considered. We shall then go into the judging and tallying process to determine the winners.
NOTE: Judging will be based on a mix of:
- Post virality (Views, shares, upvote/downvote score, number of comments)
- Quality of the submission (typos, grammar, creativity) and
- Input from the sponsoring partners (Find a way of creatively including the brand whose gifts you are interested in winning and what their business is about. Further details below)
Step 5:
On Friday, February 28th, the winners will be announced and their prizes handed over to them by our partners in the competition.
For those that are not in Uganda where the prizes apply but still want to participate, or those not interested in the competitive side of the campaign, go right ahead and submit your entry. Love is love, reward or not. Otherwise, thatās it. If anything isnāt clear, ask in the comment section and we shall clarify. All right then, what are you waiting for, get to it already…

Hello muwado, I’ve read the post and I’d love to take part in the competition.
However, I’m a Luganda writer and performance poet, meaning my submission will be in Luganda.
Do I qualify or it’s only for English writers?
Nsubuga, thank you for your interest in taking part in the competition and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. We are accepting submissions in all languages. If anything, we enthusiastically encourage submissions in the languages of the land. We’ll adjust the guidelines to reflect this. Best of luck and we can’t wait to read your entry.
