MAAMA NAKI’S TALES
Chapter 4
They stared at me with wide eyes. I tried not to smile. Yiiii, no grand entrance any more. I felt bad about it. Maama Jonah pointed at my face, asking me why I was there. She started with shouting how I always have lugambo and spread the wrong rumours but lovelies I always spread authentic news like today I have to move around the village telling everyone what happened and when they call me in the village meeting I bring out the evidence with every one present so that all people get to know that such bad acts are not needed in the society. I would then ask the chairman of the village to give the guilty person a good punishment. One might say why don’t I mind my business. But why should I? This is humanity at stake. How can you do an act that has such consequences of being beaten, what if your face is defamed or beaten to death? Then make me have the sad updates. That I can’t accept that’s why am neutral. I will be helping her to report the man on domestic violence and save the woman from dying as a witch. For the consequences of my actions, like the marriage falling apart. That’s not my issue since it was at the brink of its end anyway. We shall just consider this as the last push.
So as she was still quarrelling. I caught my tall dress and started running immediately. I ran as I looked back, I didn’t want anyone to tamper with my evidence. I felt like I was holding a hot potato. I was very excited, this was going to be like one of those days I have very authentic news. One of these days I think I should become a journalist I feel I can manage this job. So I ran too fast and almost fell on the ground. Luckily I only slipped, looking back, no one was following. I was already panting. This was very exciting. So I walked back home happily. I was supposed to send the information out today but these people don’t have a WhatsApp group so I’m going to spread this by word of mouth tomorrow.
The next day in the market.
I like going to the market early every morning, it’s always refreshing the prices are always low. As always, I have to stock groceries for a week. As I was selecting groceries, someone called me from behind on turning back, I saw Mrs Kataike. Let me tell you a little about this woman, she’s the one who wins me in this business of lugambo. The moment she hears something, in no time it will be everywhere. I knew by using her, it will have eased my job. The only problem she is the kind who will say the person who told her, and she over exaggerates the whole situation. She was efficient I couldn’t leave her out on this one.
The moment I saw her, I knew she would be the right person to send this interesting information to married women community. When we started talking, I informed her what happened. I didn’t tell her about my evidence, I wanted to be mysterious.
So after I went back home and prepared food for my pregnant husband, sorry, my loving husband. In the evening, when I was preparing to rest Maama Jonah came to my compound shouting in tears, crying loudly. She came with a group of people she started causing a scene in my husband’s compound. She was busy bringing out crocodile tears. I tried hiding in the house, but discovered that if I don’t come out, this was going to stretch till my loving husband comes back. That’s when I came out and accused her point-blank. She was so angry that she wanted to slap me on the face. I got scared, then I whispered to Mrs Kataike if she slapped me, I was going to report her to the chairman Local Council One and make her pay for my medical expenses. She laughed at me and said it out loud to everyone. Almost everyone laughed, they felt like I, the troublemaker maker wanted to reach out to the authorities faster than the victims.
At this very moment, I saw Maama Jona trying not to smile. Then used that opportunity to say she was going to report me to the chairman herself. Many agreed with her. But personally, I was glad I knew that she had fallen into my trap. That’s when they left my house. I had a sigh of relief when I knew I was half the winner. The meeting was scheduled the next evening at the chairman’s house. Wait and know what happened at the meeting.
