We thank God for Jamie Foxx

We thank God for Jamie Foxx. I also don’t know why I’d never imagined he has another name other than Jamie Foxx.

The clearest memory I have of him in music was when he was performing Gold digger. I don’t remember which stage it was cuz I was a kid. Fast-forward to the movie Django. I may not remember the exact storyline but I know how it made me feel then another fast-forward to hearing him be silly on Garcelle Beauvais’ podcast. I still don’t remember the exact words he said yet when I remember the interview, I smile sheepishly.

Jamie, in his special, cussed us out for calling him a clown but he downright is. He’s one wild lovable fella.

“What had happened was” follows the death scare that was put on his head. The Netflix special is a riveting trip around the emotional spectrum. You laugh, you get embarrassed, you cry, beam with pride, love and repeat.

6 things stood out for me.

1. You will die in the hands of doctors. Not because fate dictates it but the failure of these professionals to explore all there is that could be making life unbearable. They get one thing and run with it or even discharge you with it. If anything, wrong diagnoses are one of the things I hate. In 2024, I was riddled with anxiety in the name of it.

2. Your dreams are as valid as tragedy is probable.

3. God has a way he will call you to himself.

4. When Jamie said that “sometimes you gotta laugh to keep from crying” it spoke to how many of us have learned to use humor both to cope and to mask our emotions. Like a chorus of a song, Jamie said it again and again that during this trying time, he grew to believe that if he can stay funny, he can stay alive. Beyond coping or masking, this may also speak to leaning more towards the things that keep us alive.

5. Letting yourself be vulnerable and truthful to your therapist is the gateway to your healing.

6. In Jamie Foxx’s words “When you think about..As you grow older, you wonder about those hard times. Who’s gonna be there? Who’s actually going to be there?”

And for this I’d like to leave you with Asa’s song with the words “Where do you go, when you’re by yourself? Who comes along when you cry for help?”
