The book: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF LAPWONY MICHEAL OCAN is an anthology of tributes as shared by family and friends. On Monday, May 30, 2022, while working on the second edition of the book, I made a trip to one of Uganda’s traditional and top-performing schools, King’s College Budo. After completing his “O” level at Comboni College, my father came to Budo for “A” level in 1973-4.
The Deputy Headmaster, Mr. Godfrey Atwine was receptive and very kind. He granted me access to my father’s file. I was amazed at how neat and intact the records and files of many years were kept.
“If you had not gone to Budo, where would you have gone? We used to call it ‘the school’ “

From the records, I found out my father studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and was in England House. “He was a valuable Senior who made a good contribution as a sportsman in the School Athletics, Football and School Basketball Team. He was also a basic team leader in the Young Christian Students(YCS)” read a recommendation. Others include; Gombolola: AGORO Ssaza: LAMWO East-Acholi: District.
Some prominent personalities from Acholi land who went to King’s College Budo include; Okot p’Bitek, Prof. Alexander Odonga Mwa, Dr. Martin Aliker, Amb. Olara Otunnu, Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, Mark Ocitti Ongom to mention a few.
Mr. George H.A Obua made an in-depth contribution in the anthology about my father‘s education and career entitled: “A DISTINGUISED EDUCATIONIST AND ICON OF SELFLESSNESS”.
