It is said that good dads set the bar high for all men.
My dad turns a year older today, either 68 or 70 depending on whose word you take for it.
Growing up, heās been a constant presence looming large over my life, so much that I chose a similar career path. I never tire of hearing about his hard work, integrity and the Christian principles that guide his life. Obviously thereās the unspoken expectation and self-imposed pressure to live up to the name and the legend.
My fondest memories of him are the long chats over the years with lots of wisdom embedded in there. Weāve had several dad-daughter dates over good food and I even once succeeded in dragging him to an Isaiah Katumwa jazz concert.
I appreciate my dad for being intentional about curving time from his busy schedule to spend time with us. Sunday was always family time with a morning service, sumptuous lunch and afternoon games or visits with friends and family.Holidays from school often also meant a few days of leave from work for him.
Most of all, heās been kind and a gentleman for as long as Iāve known him. Even when I was away at boarding school and going through some really turbulent times in my twenties, I knew that I could count on him.
The one thing I never doubted for a minute was that he loved my mother.Throughout the 31 years they spent together, their laughter and late night conversation stand out as a core memory for me. Until the very end of her illness, he was by her side dotting on her and giving his all.
No man is perfect, and by all means he too has faults, but thereās a good man Iām privileged to call a father and a friend. Happy birthday dad!
