A letter to the future I want.

Dear, future,

Not you, the rapper, but let me wrap this up.

I come from a far-off place, where the sun sets last. I was there last week to check on the old folks and cows and goats and farms and breathe fresh air and take a break from capitalism. There, I didn’t see many young folks moving about. I only saw old peeps tending to their herds and banging kaboozi and giving less damns about billionaire X in San Francisco.

The young folks packed their bags long ago and climbed rickety taxis and migrated to urban centers to look for a shilling. Dear, future, how did we get here? Look, I understand. We all need to be able to put a plate of food (even if it’s at 2 am) on the table. But this isn’t the future I want. A future I want needs to have equal opportunities no matter where one lives.

The future I want should cater for rural areas like my place. It should have good transportation infrastructure where our young folks can easily transport their goods for commerce. That way, they won’t be boarding buses to Namayiba Bus Park. Dear, future, kindly spread out and level the ground of opportunities for folks in rural areas. I hope the world will be fully connected so that a young lad can easily jump on Zoom from under a tree and say, “I have nothing on my end,” but be able to win a pitch.

Dear, future, I hope there will be less congestion, hordes of people struggling to access little available opportunities and services. I hope there will be social-economic equality and reduction in poverty levels. I hope women and girls will be empowered and GBV will be non-existent and little or no cases of harmful practices against humanity. Also, a future where we don’t have to write letters about a better future.

Yours sincerely,

Today.
