A letter to Myself

Dear Self,

As you embark on this journey as a storyteller, remember  that writing is a form of inquiry, a way of exploring the world and your place in it. your passion for sharing the history and culture of your heritage is a gift. Your dedication to educating the younger generation is commendable, and your love for telling stories of legends, myths, and biblical characters is inspiring.

You have a unique voice and perspective that deserves to be heard. Don’t be afraid to share your stories, even if they may seem ordinary or insignificant to you. Every story has the power to connect with someone, to inspire, to educate, or to heal.

As you work on developing your writing skills, remember that it’s a process. Focus on crafting sentences that are clear, concise, and evocative, Don’t be too hard on yourself if it doesn’t come easily at first. Keep reading, listening, and researching, and you will see improvement over time. Your writing is a reflection of your unique voice and perspective, and it’s okay if it takes time to develop.

One of your greatest strengths is your ability to connect with your audience through the stories you tell. Whether it’s a legend, a myth, or a biblical tale, you have a gift for bringing these stories to life. Don’t underestimate the power of your voice and the impact it can have on others.

As you continue on this journey, remember that consistency and perseverance are key. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Keep sharing your stories, and know that they are making an impact, even if it’s not always visible.

You are not just a storyteller; you are a guardian of your people’s history and culture. Keep shining a light on the stories that need to be told, and know that you are making a difference.

Remember why you started this journey. You wanted to keep the history and culture of your people alive, and to share the stories that have shaped your identity. Don’t lose sight of this goal, even when faced with challenges.

As you navigate the world of storytelling, you will encounter challenges and setbacks. There will be times when you feel like giving up, when it seems like no one is listening or caring about the stories you tell. But don’t let those feelings discourage you.

Instead, remember why you started telling stories in the first place. Remember the passion and excitement you felt when you first began sharing your stories with others. Hold onto that passion, and let it drive you forward, even when the journey gets tough.

You are not alone in this journey. There are countless other storytellers out there, all working to share their own unique stories and perspectives with the world. Seek out these fellow storytellers, and learn from them. Share your own experiences and insights, and be open to feedback and guidance.

As you continue to grow and develop as a storyteller, remember to stay true to yourself and your art. Don’t try to imitate others or follow trends; instead, focus on developing your own unique voice and style.

writing is a form of attention. As you tell your stories, pay attention to the world around you. Notice the details, the textures, the sounds, and the smells. Use these sensory details to bring your stories to life.

It’s okay to be inspired by others, but don’t let their success dictate your own path. You have a unique perspective and voice that deserves to be heard. Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things; it’s often the biggest risks that lead to the greatest rewards.

I know that you tend to lose focus and get caught up in what others are doing. You start to compare yourself and your style to theirs, and you feel like you need to conform to fit in. But remember, your uniqueness is your strength. Don’t try to copy someone else’s style; instead, focus on developing your own.

I also know that you’re unsure about the legalities of using other people’s published stories. This is a valid concern, and it’s great that you’re thinking about it. Remember that as a storyteller, you have the power to create your own unique stories and adaptations. Don’t be afraid to put your own spin on traditional tales, and always make sure to give credit where credit is due.

Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back from sharing your stories. You have a gift, and it deserves to be shared with the world. Keep pushing forward, even when the journey gets tough. Keep sharing your stories, and know that they are making a difference.

Finally, remember that writing is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the process, and don’t get too caught up in the end result.

You are a storyteller, and your stories matter.

Sincerely,

Munangi Roydah
