Influencer (An excerpt)

Things were simply not going well for me. In September, I went to Kawale to evict a tenant from my father’s house. I overheard my father telling his new wife that the tenant hadn’t been paying rent. So, that evening, Gibo and I went to throw the man out; my father didn’t want anyone living in his house for free, like some orphan. The tenant finally left after about a week because we kept showing up daily to pressure him. Son of a bastard.

Once he was gone, I decided to sell the house to Manze. He gave me a hundred thousand, no written agreement, nothing. Later, my father found Manze in the house and asked him what he was doing there. Manze told him he’d bought the house from me. When my father asked, I confirmed it and said it was part of my inheritance.

“Did you help build that house to think you can sell it? What’s wrong with you, Charles?” he asked.

“My mother helped build it,” I replied.

He got furious and wanted to beat me. I told him if he laid a hand on me, I’d fight back.

The other reason I sold the house, though I didn’t tell him, was because of his ridiculous second wife. I can’t stand her. She was always a nuisance, always arguing like she was high on something. I’m sure she smokes weed too. Now, my father gives her all his attention. She’s the one who dragged me into smoking and drugs. My father used to be a respected man. These days, he acts like a child.

Anyway, my father had Manze arrested, but he got out within a week, his rich father bailed him out. Once free, he started bothering me, demanding his hundred thousand back. I told him to go ask my father. I warned him that if he kept pressing me, I’d cut off his manhood.

My father kicked me out over the whole issue, claiming weed is ruining me. But he owns so many houses, why can’t I benefit from at least one? It’s obvious that when he dies, we’ll fight over them with his young wife. I may be his child, but that wife of his, who’s probably my age, is shameless and disrespectful. She walks around the house half-naked, sitting carelessly with her thighs on display
