Weekly Picks

Hola,

DID YOU KNOW?

“Disk jockey” was first coined by Walter Winchell as a result of describing the then radio announcer Martin Block in 1935, nonetheless, it wasn’t until 1943 that the first DJ dance party was held in England by the same man who became the first DJ to ever use twin turntables. And just like that, the term we often use in regard to the sound maestros that keep us on our feet was birthed. Little did Walter Winchell know that his words would be a global phenomenon.

With that being said, let’s first take a sneak peek into this week’s picks;

LADIES!

A girls night out is on every ladies’ to-do list. Whether it is a sleepover, book club, date night or even a club night out. From the introverts, to the extroverts all the way to the ambiverts, there is always a way to have a “Girls’ Night”. Fortunately for the ladies in Kampala, MEZO NOIR has got y’all covered with the GIRLS IN THE CITY themed night headlined by a prominent guest Dj from South Africa (Dj MILKYWAYS).

LIGHTS OUT

A war is more less a bi product of a disagreement between two or more forces or groups of people. This bi product erodes relationships, destructs homes and, as well frustrates and eliminates innocent lives. In a nutshell, the wages of war is destruction and death. FORGOTTEN VOICES is a documentary bringing to your attention the effects and repercussions of the war in Sudan; the sorrows and the never ending desire for peace. Lest we do not forget our brothers and sisters in prayer that border us in the North.

EDM WAVES

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, after the emergence of raving, pirate radio, underground festivals, and an outburst of interest in club culture, EDM scored mainstream popularity in Europe. For those that do not know what EDM is;

Electronic Dance Music is a genre of music that consists of other sub-genres such as house, techno and trance, this kind of music is usually played at raves, festivals and few nightclubs. SAFARI MAZE has this experience waiting for your embrace. 😉

PYLADIES

PYLADIES is a global mentorship group geared towards helping marginalized genders become active participants and leads in the Python open-source community. This mentorship program breeds and infuses diversity with skill empowerment. PYLADIES KAMPALA creates this same haven and atmosphere for those in Kampala interested in coding. Dear Ladies, this one is greatly yours, upgrade those tech skills. 🙂

WASHOKU

WASHOKU also known as Japanese cuisine is majorly rice and Miso soup with emphasis on seasonal ingredients. Mind you, rice is not the only staple food for the Japanese, but so are noodles (soba, Udon). The Japanese Brunch is a nice start for Ugandans with curious taste buds and, are into culinary adventure exploring the vast cuisines in their reach.

Uganda being baptized as the PEARL OF AFRICA did not just come out of the blue. Some of the reasons for this is not only because of the natural heritage and beauty of the nation, but also the hospitality of the nation’s citizens. Take into account the variety of cultures currently living in Uganda from other nations, every continent has at least 2-3 nations having citizens living and working in Uganda under its free-market economy. Isn’t that some food for thought!

Until next time, I remain…

Yours truly,

-ThiWordKnight-
