Earlier this morning, at UCC House in Bugolobi, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) officially unveiled a brand-new Cinema Mobile Van, a groundbreaking step for the country’s creative industry.
The facility is designed with multiple functions in mind, all aimed at strengthening Uganda’s film and theatre ecosystem:
- Expanding Access to Film: The van will travel to schools and communities across the country to build local audiences for Ugandan films.
- Promoting Local Content: It will serve as a platform to showcase homegrown productions and shift audience perceptions, sparking greater appreciation and demand for Ugandan stories.
- Supporting Theatre Arts: With a built-in stage, the van also creates opportunities for theatre groups to perform, bringing live drama closer to the people.
This development arrives at a timely moment, as Uganda’s creative sector continues to celebrate its recognition in the national planning budget. For the film industry in particular, the van represents hope in tackling one of its biggest challenges, limited access to local audiences.
However, one lingering question remains: how will independent film producers and exhibitors gain access to this mobile cinema, especially for newly premiered films that need wider circulation? That clarity will be vital in ensuring the van benefits the wider filmmaking community.
For now, the unveiling marks a historic milestone. Congratulations to UCC for this initiative that could redefine how Ugandans watch, enjoy, and engage with their own cinema.
