STREAM EAST LAUNCHED

A few days ago, a major milestone was achieved for East African filmmakers and audiences alike, the launch of Stream East, a new streaming platform tailored specifically for the region’s creative industry.

Officially unveiled in Kampala, Uganda, Stream East was introduced at the closing of the Eastern Africa Filmmakers’ Summit, held under the UNESCO-supported “Revitalising the Film Industry for Livelihood Enhancement (REFILE)” project, and funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD).

With support from the $100,000 REFILE project, this platform stands out as a regionally owned and filmmaker-led initiative, aimed at empowering Eastern Africa’s storytellers by giving them a dedicated space to showcase their work, reach wider audiences, and earn from their craft.

Stream East is a digital stage for East African cinema, built to:
– Provide access to both regional and global markets
– Support revenue generation for content creators
– Celebrate the diversity and cultural richness of Eastern Africa

For filmmakers, this is a chance to break past barriers and reach viewers across borders while retaining ownership and value of our work. For audiences, it’s a treasure trove of authentic, homegrown stories just waiting to be discovered.
