As someone who loves traveling and discovering new corners of Uganda, there’s always a thrill in finding a place that completely surprises you and this weekend, Buvuma Island did exactly that.
Though I’m often drawn to popular travel gems like Fort Portal, Murchison Falls, or the dramatic landscapes of the southwest, this time my compass pointed me toward Lake Victoria, and more specifically, to Buvuma, one of cluster of serene islands nestled just a short ferry ride from the mainland.
We set off from Kiyindi Landing Site, and in just 30–35 minutes, the ferry glided us across the lake to Kirongo, one of Buvuma’s main docking points. The ride itself was refreshing, i mean the wind in your hair, the calming sound of the waves, and the expansive views of the lake quickly setting the tone for what felt like a small escape from the bustle of central Uganda.
But what met us on the other side was nothing short of paradise.
Buvuma is a breathtaking mix of unspoiled beauty and agricultural promise. The island’s natural landscape is lush, green, and inviting, with a calmness that wraps around you like a warm breeze. What stood out most for me was the impressive palm oil farming happening across the area. It’s clear that Buvuma is fast becoming a hotspot for agro-tourism, and there’s so much untapped potential waiting to be explored or invested in!
I had the chance to walk through the palm gardens, speak with local farmers, and observe the growth taking place. The combination of fertile land, calm atmosphere, and warm community energy makes this place feel like a fresh canvas for anyone looking to blend nature, business, or even creativity.
In fact, I’ve made a decision: I’m buying land in Buvuma. This is the kind of place you grow with quietly, intentionally, and with a deep sense of purpose.
And for my fellow filmmakers and creatives, here’s a thought: why aren’t we shooting more films in Buvuma? The landscapes are rich, the light is golden, and the setting is perfect for stories that want to reflect nature, resilience, romance, or adventure. Let’s give this place a voice in our cinematic storytelling.
If you haven’t been yet, put Buvuma Island on your travel list. Whether you’re going to relax, explore, invest, or create, you’ll come back feeling like you’ve found a new secret.
