RolexKeymasterMo, are you happy with the state of the creative industry here? What would you change about it if you have that kind of power? Like, one of the things I like about your videos is how they are very tuned to the local context. The setting, the expressions, the pucnhlines…all very Ugandan and relatable. I personally would want to see more of that.

RolexKeymasterMo, what’s your process for a video. Do you write all your jokes, who shoots the videos? Are the random scenes in the video like porridge being delivered also scripted?

RolexKeymasterHi guys. Seems most of the good questions have been asked. From my end, thanks for a well written series that’s kept me entertained over the last couple of months and looking forward to more. For a question, I’ll go with where do you envision yourselves as storytellers in 5 years time? Where would you like to see the state of storytelling in the country/continent in the same period? Or, asked differently, what do you think should be changed about the current status of the sector currently?

RolexKeymasterWhat does the future look like for you? Are you still determined to achieve all the dreams you’d set out for yourself before mental health issues became speed bumps, if they haven’t always been present, or have you had to adjust expectations?

RolexKeymasterHere is a very naive one, is there a bright side at all to mental illness? Do you ever think to yourself, it sucks that I have to deal with this on a regular basic but on the lip side, here are some valuable life lessons it has taught me or it maybe gives me this advantage over others?

RolexKeymasterYou’ve been blogging regularly about mental health. What triggered that thought of I now need to write a book?

December 23, 2019 at 1:49 pm #27360
RolexKeymasterHi Rita. Glad you are doing this kaboozi session. Even ‘gladder’ you are doing the work to shed the stigma around mental health. In one of your blogs you say,
…the stigma attached to mental health is so great that people who suffer from it are ashamed to say they are not well or others don’t even know they are sick and just cannot do life anymore…
Since publicly coming out about your struggles with mental health, have you been treated differently by friends and family?

RolexKeymasterYou are dedicated to highlighting issues that minority groups including your own tribe, homeless street children in Thekwini, Bushmen in the Kalahari and Zulu people in Durban and others face. From your experiences working with them, is there hope for them or is the big capitalist and globalisation machinery too relentless?

RolexKeymasterMaybe as a adjoinder, we had classism in Africa even before colonialists came racism. With the continent embracing the worst of capitalism as is evidenced by our corruption statistics, the classisim has only gotten worse. How do you intend to reverse this mindset at the cultural skills development center?

RolexKeymasterIn a blog post by a gentleman that joined you for part of the journey and was supposed to help you write a book about it (was it completed btw), you are quoted as saying you wanted to see for yourself if the “kind human” still existed in humankind. Considering some of the tribulations along the way, what have been your 5 main moments that have restored your faith in humanity?
-
October 11, 2019 at 10:54 am #26218
RolexKeymasterYou have a masters in political science. This might suggest you had intentions of joining the ‘rat race’ at a certain point in your past. Were the violent actions of the Kenyan govt towards your tribesmates what sparked the calling to go back to your traditional way of life or was that always there and formal education was a matter of curiosity?

RolexKeymasterOne of the articles I read about your journey was dissecting your choice of South Africa as choice for making your statement about the plight of your people. What influenced you to make a stand in South Africa and, a’s an extension, what are your thoughts on the recent spat of violence against other Africans in South Africa?
-
October 11, 2019 at 10:15 am #26210
RolexKeymasterYou walked to South Africa to protest the Kenyan government not respecting the land agreement that was made with the colonialists and the Masaai. For those like me that were not aware of this, have their been any positive developments for your tribemates in the approx 15 years since you set off?
-
October 11, 2019 at 10:04 am #26208
RolexKeymasterHey Miyere. Thank you for agreeing to do this. My first question is basically asking for an update on your walk from South Africa to Cairo/Morocco. The last media coverage I found was when you were setting off. Did you complete it?

RolexKeymasterSpeaking of Bad Idea, it’s been around for some time now. Has the column changed over the years in your opinion? Has it changed you. Constantly writing bad ideas for several years surely leaves you in a state where you observe the world in a certain way. I ask this because I remember reading from one of the guys that work at Cracked, I think, and he said he now see’s satirical headlines in everything and all conversations now.

RolexKeymasterAh. There you are. Now, since you mentioned Sckrrrrrapapap, what do you think of that Fire in the booth jam, and what it means for the future of hip-hop and music in general. Do you thin, whatever that category that falls in, is going to replace mumble rap?

RolexKeymasterIt’s around 3 so I guess we can kick this off. @Baz should be in the building, if he hasn’t been delayed by the rain. Baz, say hello so I know I’m not speaking to myself.
Since this is the first time we are doing this, let me explain how it’ll go. It’s like a tweet chat, but on Muwado and hopefully easier to follow. Anyone can ask a question and Baz will answer. Refresh page to see the latest. When he’s tired, since we didn’t agree on duration, he’ll notify and we all go on to kick off the weekend.
Still lost? Watch and learn. Baz, say something.

RolexKeymasterI agree on the low barriers to entry for this sector. I also like your theory of change and wish you the best with the eliugift project. It sounds like it’ll do major good if implemented as envisioned. Will look for that report and go through it.

RolexKeymasterSeen people like this in movies but I don’t think I have encountered someone who does this in real life. You just became 100 times cooler to me. DO you think this gift makes you a better actor? Also, what are the downsides. I imagine it must be taxing if you are feeling emotions from someone who is in emotional pain…

RolexKeymasterYa, no threats from me. I remember the episode of the dude that kidnapped Suki and things went south. Not about to get into that drama.
How about the other internet personalities you have created. I remember seeing an Anita. Is it just you being goofy and hopefully growing something yuuge in the process, or is there some deep examination of society you are communicating with all these characters?
