Wait wait wait, let me tell you something
No, no, no, listen. Listen, okay? I think the problem is that too many of us aspire to happiness as a default state. But it’s unsustainable, okay? Happiness is not an infinitely exponentially increasing emotional state, okay? You reach a high, and you plateau. And not only that, you even start to drop from that high, even if it’s by infinitesimal degrees at a time.
Now, when your baseline is that once-in-a-little-while high, any drops below that high will feel like a negative on the x and y graph of your general emotional state. And, because happiness is a state that requires a stimulus to exist, you’re forever tethered to that need for a stimulus to maintain this godawful unreasonable baseline.
That’s why you should choose a reasonable emotional baseline – CONTENTMENT. I’m a big fan of contentment. It’s low enough on the reaction scale that it can exist even in the absence of a stimulus, but not so low that you’re stuck in a state of feeling meh. And small peaks of happiness will be all the more appreciated because the baseline is so low. Contentment, guys! Let happiness be a snack. Make contentment your core meal.
