HOLLYWOOD ACTOR MEETS UGANDAN ACTORS & PRODUCERS

The growing strength and influence of guilds in Uganda’s film industry is beginning to bear fruit, as seen in the increased collaborations between producers and actors and most recently, in a special engagement hosted at UCC House.

on Saturday 12th July, Ugandan film producers and actors had the rare opportunity to meet and interact with Gbenga Akinnagbe, a Nigerian-American actor, writer, and producer known for roles in major Hollywood productions. Gbenga was in Uganda on a personal visit to explore the beauty of the Pearl of Africa, and thanks to some quick-thinking organizers, an impromptu industry meetup was arranged to tap into his wealth of experience.

Though the communication was understandably last-minute and only reached select industry platforms, the turnout was impactful. (I personally missed the session as I was enroute to Buvuma Island but I promise to keep you posted on future opportunities with visiting stars.)

The event was jointly mobilised by the National Producers Guild of Uganda and the Screen Actors Guild of Uganda, in collaboration with the Office of the President and hosted by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).

Among the key attendees were:

  • Mathew Nabwiso, President of the National Producers Guild and producer of the hit TV series Sanyu
  • Edris Lubega, President of the Screen Actors Guild of Uganda
  • Nathan Magoola, producer of the acclaimed drama series Prestige and Beloved
  • Amanya Leonard, representing UCC and producer of award-winning film Crystal under Amaka Film Productions

Gbenga’s session was both insightful and inspiring. He shared his journey through the Hollywood system, the struggles he faced, and how many of the challenges creatives face are universal, whether in New York or Kampala. He emphasized the importance of understanding industry structures, knowing the rules that govern producers and actors, and preparing for the future with strategy and solidarity.

Importantly, Gbenga expressed his deep admiration for Uganda’s creative energy and stated his desire to collaborate with Ugandan talent to tell authentic stories from the continent.

This gathering was a testament to the power of guilds as unifying structures, helping film professionals speak with one voice, attract international partnerships, and shape a more organized industry.

More visits like this are expected in the near future and this time, we’ll make sure every creative gets the memo!
