“DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU’RE MY GIRLFRIEND?” A Novel about the World We Don’t See and The Myths We Choose Not To Believe A TRUE STORY

PROLOGUE: THE GENESIS

Chebet Alyson looked at Kaheru James asleep beside her, it had been a happy couple of months for her. Gosh, had it been that long already? Two months of a somewhat relationship was long in Alyson’s book. A somewhat relationship because James had a girlfriend he had been with for over two years, so Alyson was what they would call his ‘side-piece’ even though James had always insisted that she was not. So, what was she then? He could never seem to formulate an answer.

Alyson and James had met in October that year, funnily enough through her kind-of-but-not-exactly ex-boyfriend Mangeni Ian.

Alyson had a lot of those.

She had been attracted to James as soon as she stepped into Ian’s room at Mitchell Hall in Makerere University. He was just the type of guy she liked but had not been able to get so far.

Alyson had liked Ian back in the day but his string of campus girls had been a problem, and not a palatable one. Now she looked at the two boys arguing in harsh whispers and thanked God that at least she had met one decent friend of Ian’s. That had always been a point of conflict for Ian and Alyson, the fact that his friends were ‘not up to par’.

“Mhmm kati what’s wrong with you two?” Alyson asked them.

“I wanted to give you a ride to your friend’s hall on condition we can stop by my guy’s place first?”

‘Guy’s’ Alyson frowned, and not inwardly, her thoughts were always shown in her expressions. It was a bloody curse. Boys always had ‘guys’, ‘bros’, ‘day one’s’, ‘tight-o’s’, ‘bade’s’. However, her main thoughts right now were that James had a car! A car! Could he get any hotter?

“Sure, let’s go,” Alyson said.

Ian shot them both a look. Despite him failing to ever give Alyson the official girlfriend title when they were sort-of-together, Ian had always considered Alyson ‘his’. If they had been dogs, he had basically peed on and all around her. As much as the audacity of his claims shocked Alyson, she was also slightly flattered that after all this time he still liked her. Of course, as long as you were even slightly female, Ian liked you, so what good did that for anyone?

They pulled up to the parking lot of a boy’s hall in the university. University hall as a name had never quite made sense to Alyson. It sounded like a communal main hall but nope, it was not. Also, she could never forgive it because it had the dirtiest bathrooms she had ever encountered. Were they beasts or were they men? She shuddered away the thought to concentrate on a question James was asking,

“Are you coming in with us or you’ll wait in the car?”

Oh, the car! She was still really happy he had a car. As much as she did not want to enter the hall, she had no clue what they planned to do there. They might take forever and Alyson was an impatient control freak that liked to be in charge. Waiting was not her thing.

“I’ll come with you”.

They entered the hall and went straight across the path in between the lawns and up the stairs. James knocked on a door at the end of the corridor. When the door was opened, Alyson was stunned. Marijuana. So much marijuana. The smoke was everywhere and the room was full of boys who were looking at her like they weren’t really there or anywhere at all. They were at a drug dealer’s! Alyson loved investigative TV but that only meant that her hairs stood straight all over her body because she expected the FBI to burst in on them. This thought of course was foolish because the FBI was in America and this was Uganda. Also, all due respect, Ugandan police didn’t really give a (place respective curse word here). But still, Alyson was frightened. Unfortunately, this made James a bad boy.

A hot bad boy with a car.

Again, could he really get any hotter?

Alyson reached out and kissed James on the cheek.

“I’m awake, he said and turned to kiss her on the mouth but Alyson wasn’t paying attention, “What’s wrong?” he asked.

“I had that weird dream again.”

“Maybe you just missed me,” James joked.

Alyson hated that James did that, tried to make light of every situation. Something was seriously wrong and here he was making jokes.

Alyson had had a repetitive dream for the past two months that was driving her crazy. The only solution she had found was that she didn’t have the dreams if she slept during the day and given that she was unemployed, she could afford to switch her sleeping schedule, but that was only a temporary solution. She eventually reached out to a friend of hers with a prophetic gift that had been of help to her before. He had gotten back to her a week ago on James’s birthday with a bizarre translation of the dreams.

“God says you need everything you’ve been studying for what’s ahead of you”.

Alyson had honestly burst out laughing. What on earth could that mean? She had been studying about demons for months. How, when and why could she need that information? She had wondered.

That night after she had spoken to her friend, she and James finished up with his birthday dinner and she went home. She was staying alone at her sister’s rental in Nalyaa. But that night had been very strange. Alyson was sure someone or rather some thing had been in her bed with her! Doing things to her that only James did. Even worse, it hadn’t felt like a dream. She knew it was real. And it kept happening again and again.

As Alyson listened to James reassuring her, she sighed. Something was wrong, and not even her lovely James could help her. Was she simply going crazy? Oh God she hoped she was going crazy, because any other truth was too much to bear.
