BREAKING THE CYCLE OF SILENCE

COMMUNITY-LED EFFORTS TO ADDRESS RAPE, INCENT AND DEFILEMENT IN ZAMBIA.

Lusaka and Zambia at large has recently recorded alarming numbers of rape,incent and defilement cases.According to the Zambian police service, reported cases of GBV have increased by 25% in the past year alone. However amedist these concerning statistics,a number of community-based initiatives and advocates have emerged, amining to raise awareness, push for change and ,lobbing for law amendments on people accused with rape the defilement and incest .

One such initiative is the “call to action” conducted by a local-non profit organisation. the program addresses the issues of gender-based violence in Zambia it outlines a list of demands aimed to combating gbv supporting survivors. Amending law and policies and, holding accountable the perpetrators.The program has seen remarkable success, with people showing interests in participating and engaging with the initiative. On Tuesday 3rd April 2025 the call to action held a solidarity walk against sexual abuse in Lusaka,with seven other districts participating.

Another initiative, the “shield her future”, a youth lead project and aimed at preventing defilement and promoting child safety. The project raises awareness, empowers youths and engage communities to report and prevent defilement cases, creating a safer environment for children and young people. The organization offers counselling, advocacy, and practical assistance, helping survivors to navigate the complex of the traumatic process of dealing with the aftermath of abuse.

By focusing on community-based solution these initiatives are helping to break the cycle of abuse in Zambia. Rather than simply relying on law enforcement or punishments, they shine a light on these cases, and providing support to those who need it most
