We gather here today not in sorrow, but in gratitude and remembrance of a truly remarkable individual who touched our lives in ways words can scarcely capture. It is an honor and privilege to deliver this memorial lecture in remembrance of my dear friend, my classmate, my companion in the noble teaching profession, and a close family friend. Mike and I met in July 1975, as first year students at Makerere University, studying Bachelor of Science and Concurrent Diploma in Education. I came from Sir Samuel Baker School, and he was from King’s College Budo. We shared a journey of learning, mentorship, and a spirit of good friendship loyalty among ourselves, and today we celebrate the impact of a life well lived. Through Mike I got to learn the different parts of Kampala quickly. My hall of residence was Lumumba Hall, and his was Nkrumah Hall. Much as this was the case, we were almost equally in each other’s hall. Together with Mike, we voluntarily organized transport for our colleagues from Kampala to Gulu at the end of every semester.

A Journey of Shared Learning

From the moment we met in the lecture room as students, I knew that I had found a friend and confidant. We faced the same academic challenges, supported each other through late-night study sessions, and inspired each other to strive for excellence. Those early years of our education laid the foundation for lifelong friendship rooted in mutual respect, curiosity, and a shared passion for knowledge.

A Partnership in the Teaching Profession

As we transitioned from students to educators, our bond only grew stronger. Teaching was not just a job to us; it was a calling. We believed in the transformative power of education, and together we worked to inspire and nurture the minds of countless students. Whether it was planning lessons, debating pedagogical approaches, or sharing the joys and frustrations of the classroom, we walked this path side by side. Our conversations were always filled with enthusiasm and a commitment to the greater good of our students.

A Leader, and a Family Man

My friend was more than just a dedicated teacher; he excelled as a family man, teacher and school administrator. His honesty and integrity were evident in every aspect of his life. I remember with great appreciation how he supervised the building of my house in my absence, ensuring everything was done with precision and care. He kept all my building materials at his home. None of these got lost. He also oversaw the painting of one of the dormitories (Burton House) at Sir Samuel Baker School when I bought paints to refurbish, demonstrating his commitment to service and excellence.

A Devoted Community Servant

Beyond his professional and personal commitments, my friend was deeply involved in community work. He had a profound love for people and always sought ways to uplift those around. His dedication to the church was unwavering, and he played a key role in several church functions, including the consecrations of Bishops of the Diocese of Northern Uganda. His selflessness and devotion to community service made him a pillar of strength and inspiration. He was always very jolly, and full of laughter.

A Legacy That Lives On

Though our dear friend is no longer with us, his spirit endures in the lessons he taught, the lives he touched, and the countless memories we hold dear. His passion for education continues to inspire those in the field. His kindness and generosity remind us to cherish the relationships we hold dear. His unwavering dedication to family and community serve as a guiding light for us all.

As we remember and honor our beloved friend today, let us not dwell solely on the departure/loss, but rather on the incredible gift of his presence in our lives. Let us continue to work, uphold his values, and keep his memory alive in our actions. In doing so, we ensure that his legacy lives on—not just in words, but in deeds that uplift and inspire others.

Rest in peace, dear friend. Your journey on earth may have ended, but your impact will never fade. We will carry your lessons, love and laughter in our hearts forever.

Thank you,
