As my daughters’ school holiday began, we made it our mission to enjoy as much Ugandan content as possible. After watching the multi award winning film KAFA COH by Doreen Mirembe, we stumbled upon the drama BORDERS by Ampiire Daphne Karema. We ended up binge watching all fifteen episodes in one go and could not take our eyes off the screen until the very end.
When the last episode finished, the girls turned to me and said, “Daddy, we know the people who made this show. Please ask them if there will be another season because season one has left us wanting more.” I reached out to the producer, and she told me that production for the new season is planned for 2026. That news made all of us very happy.
You will agree with me, Uganda’s TV dramas have improved so much over the years, and BORDERS is an example of a production that both entertains and sparks meaningful conversation. Produced by Ampiire Daphne Karema, the series takes viewers on an emotional journey of ambition, resilience and the challenges of pursuing dreams across both physical and emotional borders.
The story follows Pearl (played by Tania Shakirah Kankindi), a spirited and determined young dancer, and her troupe, The African Jewel. When they get the chance to compete in a dance competition in Nairobi, Pearl sees it as the moment she has been waiting for. But her dream hits an obstacle when she realises she has no passport or national ID to cross the border legally. Determined not to miss the opportunity, she decides to find her own way, which brings her face to face with David, a Kenyan immigration officer from her past. David offers to help the troupe reach their dreams, but he is also hiding from his own struggles. Together, their journeys explore how borders of all kinds (whether physical, emotional or societal) can limit us, challenge us and sometimes bring unexpected connections.
BORDERS was made through the Content Development Support Program by the Uganda Communications Commission, an initiative that gives Ugandan producers both funding and mentorship to bring their creative ideas to life.
The lead cast includes Tania Shakira Kakindi, John Mary Sekimpi, Quicy Rapando Mulama and Roy Ronald Tumwizere. Behind the camera, the vision was brought to life by Ampiire Daphne Karema as Producer & Writer, Nondo Richard as director and Nanziri Barbra as editor.
