Why do we respect others more than we respect ourselves

The day before the Teen Personal Development Journal was released, I left a sample copy with 3 colleagues and when I walked back in the office to pick something, I found them having a chat about the first chapter of the Journal – Discovering & Setting Boundaries.

While I rummaged into my bag for what I’d come to pick, I contributed to the chat, “…it’s because we respect others more than we respect ourselves.” According to one of them, that was a punchline.

It seemed to have caught him off guard. He kept re-echoing it, looking like he was in deep thought.

In the last 2-3 days, we have been having conversations about Boundaries, and the results from the polls prove that indeed, there was never such a thing as being taught about boundaries. Heck, we were not even allowed to have emotions, save for those that are positive. We people-pleased our way into adulthood, and for some of us, we are still tied to those same shackles. No wonder adults, even those in their 60s, are also wishing the Journal wasn’t just for teens.

Under the theme ‘Rooted to Thrive‘, my main goal was to explore mental health advocacy from the ground up. Where I had a hint of boundaries in my early twenties, right in the middle of struggling with suicidal ideations, this shouldn’t be someone else’s story. No one should people-please their way into süicide.

And this is why the TPDJ package exists – to help teenagers learn what many of us weren’t taught: how to honour themselves by setting boundaries, making space for all their emotions, and choosing themselves without guilt.

If you’re a parent, guardian, teacher, counsellor or mentor, this is your chance to make sure the next generation doesn’t have to unlearn what they were never taught to begin with.
