A THEOLOGY ABOUT HAIR

Last Sunday, my big boy Thabo went to Sunday school class, and the teacher called him out loud and told him, “Please, by next Sunday, before you come to church, you must cut your hair.”

Thabo has always worn his hair in dreads. He has always treated his hair simply as hair, so this was very confusing for him.

Uhuru, his ten-year-old brother, also told of an incident where another ten-year-old had said to him, “You must cut your hair. What kind of parent would allow their child to keep hair like that?” Uhuru boldly replied, “My parents,” and went on to give him a whole lecture about hair, Africa, the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord, and salvation.

We have a lot to decolonize from our gospel here in Africa. We need a proper theology on hair, also — and many other things. We major in minors and miss the point. People often come up with their own doctrines and theologies, even when they are contrary to the denominations they claim to represent.

I am yet to speak to this teacher, who happens to be new at the church, and learn his theology.
